I was talking with a friend last night and we are wondering about using old gas from his boat.
Because of health problems he has not been able to take the boat out for about 6 or 7 years. I know gas turn into a varnish like liquid over time but he has about 120 gallons in the boat and with todays prices it would be nice to be able to use it.
Is there something that can be added to bring it back? Octane booster maybe?
Thanks for any info you may have on this, he really could use this fuel if it is usable.

Thanks,
Roy

May the roads and skies always be clear, and the firewood nice and dry!!

adding fresh gas would help but 6 to 7 year old gas will be pretty flat and lacking power if it would run at all and not gummed up.

Poor some in a VERY SMALL tin can and throw a match in it. I've seen some gas that would not even burn that was only a year old. On the other hand, I have a friend who died because he couldn't smell the old liquid in a 50 gallon drum and thought it was water. He cut the top off with a torch and now is in Heaven.

Stick your nose in the filler and take a sniff. If it smells like gas then give it a try if it smells like something evil then pump it out and start over.

I wouldnt run it in mine. Id get a burn permit ( typically FREE) and set fire to it all

When I was a kid and lawn mowing season started we'd just pour a small amount on the sidewalk and light it. If it burned we used it. If it didn't we'd dump it and put in fresh. If it burned weakly, we'd mix in new about 50/50.

I think your friend should pump it out in any case, then add anti-varnish products to stabilize what's left in the tank. And do what other magic is needed to prevent rust.

Meanwhile, run the burn test on what's been removed and then make your decision.

Whatever you do, do it safely.

Thanks for the replies, I think I will take a smell and if it smells like gas than I might see if it burns. I have quite the burn pile going and I could use it to get the pile going. If it doesn't light than I guess that's it.
Seems a shame to let all that gas go to waste, at todays prices that's a little under $500 worth of fuel.
Oh well.
If it does burn I could offer it to all the neighbors both his and mine for their lawnmowers
Thanks again
Roy
