Good morning. I am in McAllen. There is a light wind from the north with no rain at 0545. It did rain a bit about 0130. The storm itself is still 30 milese east south east offshore from Brownsville, moving at 8 miles per hour. The causeway has been closed at South Padre Island and all high profile vehicles were ordered off the island. The eye is now forecast to come ashore at 1000.
The forecast is for between 5 to 10 inches rain. The sustained wind near the eye is 90. The eastern part of the valley will take the brunt of the wind and rain.
Nothing to do now but sit back and watch. I'm not sure what good I might be, but if I might be of help feel free to call me at 956-330-3312.

1000 Update...
Sustained winds at the eye are 100 MPH with gusts to 121.
The eye wall is already ashore near SPI and the eye is about 30 miles offshore.
Conditions in McAllen near the intersection of Nolana Avenue and north 10th street:
Gusty winds maybe 20 MPH.
Very very light rain.
Rainfall total AO 1000 is 0.30".
Most of the cafes are open. HEB and Wal Mart and all the big box stores are open. Conditions are not nearly as bad as described by the news media.

Dennis,
Am I reading it correctly from your post that SPI is being hit pretty hard?
Just now turning on the weather channel.
Very good news to hear your area is fairing well at this point.
Thanks,
Shirley

1200 Update...
Mcallen...
Winds are out of the northwest, 20 sustained with 25 gusts.
Light rain.
0.43" as of 1045.
The SPI area is not fairing so well. Sustained winds are 105 with gusts to 121. The eye wall is ashore with the eye just offshore. Looks like it will be another 3 to 4 hours before the eye comes ashore. Local news reports that one of the high rise hotels has lost part of its roof. A TV news truck was damaged on the island. The longer the eye stays offshore, the more damage from wind and water.
