I have a 1997 Roadtrek with 26,000 miles on it bought it new in 1997 This last trip to Maine I noticed that when going up a long grade the engine would rev up and my speed would not increase, I pull a Cargo Pro 12 foot trailer also, it was a very hot day ,before I lefted on this trip I had installed a 30,000 lb gross rated trans cooler (hayden). When i got back home and driving around town I noticed when i was waiting at a stop light and i started to go into the walmart parking lot I again heard the engine rev up . ( Its a strange loud noise) Its hard to describe . I wonder if it could be the tourge converter acting up, has anyone ever heard of something like this . It doesn't do it all the time mainly when it is very hot out.I took it to my transmission person and he took it out for a drive but it did not do it with him any input would be helpful .We are going back up to Maine the full month of september and I am undecided what to do . It costs $2,000 to break it down and check it out .Would anyone have any advice?

First thing to due is check the trans fluid, pull the dip stick, check the color and check to see if it has a burned smell to it. Also it could be your fan locking up. Have a 99Dodge van that started acting the same way when pulling our trailer, added a couple electric fans to the radiator and it stopped.

+1

Is the RPM actually going up, or are you judging it by noise? I'm assuming that you have the aux cooler in front of the radiator, that puts a lot of heat through the radiator straight to the fan clutch, thinking the engine is getting hot, causing it to lock up to move more air. If it's just making noise without actual RPM increase on the tach then it's your fan doing what it does.

I'll elaborate on what SKnight said....That roaring noise sounds like your cooling fan clutch engaging which may mimic the sound of your engine revving. It is a fluid coupling at the center of the engine fan. Most of the couplings have small fins on them. In normal temps it allows the fan to free wheel to save gas. Excessive heat from the radiator will cause it to engage and force a lot more air through the radiator until your engine cools down. Ascending a steep grade will cause that to happen and is a normal function.

when my clutch fan kicks in it sounds like the engine is revving like the transmission kicked out of gear, first time it happened that's what I thought it was till I looked at the tack readings,I put a extra electric fan in front of the radiator and hooked it to a switch when it gets hot out turning the electric fan on cut the temps down and stopped the clutch fan from kicking on so much.works good in traffic or hill climbing.

Another vote for the fan clutch engaging. It makes quite a noise you are not expecting when it engages.

Thank you forum users for this question and replies. We just got back from a longer trip with our newer pu and fiver and I wondered the same thing about that noise. Not used to hearing that roar. It was a hot humid day of travel, too. Since tv is still on warranty, even wondered if I should take it in for checkup, especially since the chevy had a radiator hose fall off and engine overheated on trip. My good friend/gm repairman thought it would be good to stop in and at least have overheat on record, just in case.

I thank you all for the advice ,It seems that the clutch fan is the source of my weird noise . Thinking way back a few years ago this Happened at the toll booth while waiting in line as I left the toll station I heard this same noise and this was in the summer on a hot day. This year I had the trans cooler installed on the front of the radiator maybe this is why its coming on more often than before. I think I will look into putting a electric fan in front of the radiator, I will find out where I can get one and how to install it.. Once again I thank you all ,I think you all might of saved me $2,000 , I was seriouly thinking about going ahead with dropping the tranny. This year I got the ezpass and what a breeze going thru the tolls Bob Moyer
