We have a 1-ton dually and a 36' 5th wheel. We want to add a hitch to the 5th wheel so we can pull a utility trailer also.
Anyone know the legal length limit?
Thanks!

Most states are 65 feet. New York says 65. Funny thing is, I pulled into a thruway rest area and there was a sign saying vehicles OVER 65 feet parking.
And I can't but wonder how those double trailers behind those semi's are doing it. I know they work under a special permit and aren't allowed on any locale roads. Good Luck and happy towing Bill

Had many people on RV.net say this is not completely accurate, to check with each state's regulations. Still, everyone also agrees it's a pretty good start.
Good luck!

The maximum length for RV double towing can vary from 55 to 80 feet, depending on which state you are in. Reciprocity probably does not apply. If your home state says 80 feet, that does NOT mean you will be legal in a state where the max is 55 feet.
It is, of course, up to you to know the law wherever you are.
Good luck.

I have heard that it is illegal in Washington and Oregon. It is apparently legal in most states West of the Mississippi River, and a couple East of the River. Some states require a license endorsement, many don't. At least one state requires a Class A CDL with doubles endorsement. Yes, the state CAN require a CDL for not-for-hire non-commercial use if they so desire! Some states require the first trailer be a fifth wheel, some don't. Some states require the second trailer be a boat or other watercraft, some don't.

My buddy pulls a 40' fiver and had a 2" receiver welded on. He now tows a 25' aluminum trailer behind the fiver so he can take his polaris razor and two quads with him. He towed from Rome Georgia to Ashland West Virginia and had zero issues with the law. It is quite funny when he pulled into the campsite. Looked like a train driving by...LOL

Here in Minnesota your total rig can't be more that 70ft and when we got our 5er they told us that your camper can't be more than 28ft if you want to tow a boat or trailer behind it.

While it's legal to pull commercial doubles in almost every state it is NOT legal to pull RV doubles in about half of the continental United States.
In most of the east coast states it's illegal to tow doubles, this includes MA, NJ, NY, PA, MD, VA, and FL.
In about half of the rest it's legal to tow double. Towing double does not have reciprocity in any states unless the state tells you so in their DOT regs.
