Does anyone know if we could use our bank debit card at Canadian gas stations? Or would we have to pay with cash or use our Mastercharge card? Thanks.

I would imagine you could as I've used mine in the US when I was down there.

I used my debit card to Alaska and back. Just be aware that the station will sometimes debit your account for up to $400 when you swipe the card and then process a refund for the difference once the transaction total is known. They have up to 24 hours to effect the refund. This is common practice since they don't know if you are a small auto or a huge semi filling up. Check your bank balance each night on-line and you will see what I mean.

Some major chain stations near border crossings don't take US credit cards at the pumps, you have to go inside. Too much fraud, I guess.

We are not near the border, but some of our stations say that all US cards must be processed in the office. I always thought it was the gas station owners way of retaliation for the 'enter your zip code' that we get in the US.

Well, the cards are being honoured to my knowledge.

Going into the station to process your bill is much more the Canadian way, where I live and have lived recently.

So, you can still use your plastic.

& I, I took the road less travelled by.

We do not use a debit card, but our USA credit card has worked at every pump so far. Been in Atlantic Canada (PEI, Nova Scotia, and now Newfoundland) since end of June.

We just got back from our trip to Alaska and I used my debit card ( Mastercard ) for all my gas purchases . You might have to leave your card with the attendent while you fill but they all took them . Most had pumps with card readers .

should work, we were there last year, no problems. Just had to pay a transaction fee when we did though. For converting the currency, think it was like 10% of the bill.
