How would one go about finding a list of the differences between the model years of Excursions? I tried several review websites but you have to read a lot to get not much specific info.
Really, I want to know if it'll tow better than my 2000 in a significant way because of suspention upgrades between the model years. I understand the V-10 has more power, so that'll be nice.
I'm looking at a 2005 XLT 6.8 4x4 with 32,000 miles for $17,000

From what I have read, the suspension is unchanged enough to "improve" towing. Most still modify the rear with aftermarket parts. Other than that, the increased power of the V10 is the only difference I have read about. I've been researching and driving them lately. Buy now the wife wants a fiver again, so nix the Ex.

I have owned a 2000 and now own a 2005. The 2005 DID NOT get the 3 valve head motor. Both my X's are almost identical. The rear sway bar (std on 2005) did nothing to improve towing. That said, I think the X is the best towing SUV ever made.

The 2005 Excursion did not get that and no 3-valve V10 or 5-speed AT with it like the 2005 F250-F550.

The reasoning for not upgrading the 2005 X the way the superduty was upgraded was simple. It was being discontinued and they just used up the old parts and made the vehicle until they ran out "stuff".
I liked my 2000 so much that I wanted to order one of the last 20005 models made. My new 2005 was made in August 2005 and some extras were not available when I ordered mine because they ran out of parts and did not order more for a discontinued truck.
