Getting ready to head out to Durango Co from Effingham IL. Was going to tale 70 all the way across to Colorado but then there is no major interstate across to Durango. Anyone travel to Durango recently have an opinion. Driving a large motor home so I want to avoid as many of the passes as I can.

Thanks

Mike

Just take I-70 to Limon CO, then US 24 to Colo Springs and I-25 south to Walsenbug and US 160 west to Durango. Watch Wolf Creek pass, on the west side, gear down and take it easy. Use you r Exhaust brake if you have one, saves brake shoes.

Have fun in Durango, be sure to take the train to Silverton.

I drove US 160 east from Durange to Walsenbug and I-25 north to Colo Springs. the drive was easy and very nice county.

Yes, take the train to Silverton and see Mesa Verde NP.

If you got the opportunity stop at the San Luis lakes SP on US 160, between Walsenbug and Alamosa Co. You would be able to see/visit the Great San dunes National Park. We spend some time there last year, it was great.
Happy travels

When you take the train get an open car going up and a closed car going down.
CO is in a rain cycle right now and you will stay dry.

Agree with noman'sland. His route is probably the easiest. You could take 285 south off of I70 but you might hit a few passes (I've never been that way). Agree on the Train ride. We went last year and had a good time. We rode both ways. The Grandkids were plum tuckered out on the return trip. Actually we aren't in a rain cycle (WISH WE WERE.. VERY VERY Dry this year...

Short of taking I-70 all the way to Utah and backtracking on US 191 and US 491 or heading as far south as I-40 in NM and heading northward from there, your best bet is US 160 out of Walsenburg. And anyway, I-70 west of Denver has two large climbs -- to the Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass. Remember, you're coming to Colorado where we have mountains and passes!

Mike,

Why are you going to Colorado? Most likely to see those unbelievable Mountains. The only way to see them is to get into them, and when you get into them you will find that they are even more beautiful the Higher up you go. JMHO

The easiest drive would be to take I-70 to Limon then RT 24 to Colorado Springs then I-25 to Rt 160 – you will have jus a couple easily driven passes on the way to Durango. A couple other ways to go and see more of the beautiful Rocky Mountains would be to take I70 thru Denver then head to Leadville running down to Buena Vista from there you could head down to Del Norte and take Rt160 to Durango. I’ve left out the best Route thru Rt550 and Silverton which I hope you will go see after you get to Durango in the toad.

To much to see in Colorado to try to drive around the passes – but the amazing thing is that no matter which route you take you will never forget it – I have driven all of the routes suggested and most of them multiple times and each and every time is better than the last time.

A couple of other spots you might want to visit would be South Fork and Creede just off Rt160. so much to see and so little time

A shot of one of the roads in Leadville at 10,000+ feet – not so bad for the lightest incorporated town in the US;

No matter how you go you will enjoy the sights and people of Colorado,
