I am looking at a new truck and have pretty much decided to go with the V10 over a diesel this time due to fuel costs and the extra $7000 the diesel costs. What rear gear should I be looking for? The trucks I find seem to be 4:10's. Will that work? The 5ver is in the 11K range

i have the v10 with 3.73 pulling close to 11k, it does ok. 4.10 would be nice , but 4.30 would be better.

I would go as low as possible. Most trucks have overdrive whether they're a manual or auto trans so mileage shouldn't be much different between a 4.10 or 4.56. 4.88 would be even better if it's available.
Good Luck!

with the weight your pulling, and considering the v10, 4.30 would be optimal. any lower than that and you will be wasting more fuel. my x had 4.30 with v10 and pulled 12k quite nicely. my current tv has 3.73, wish it had the 4.30.

I have a F250 with the V10 and 4.30 gears. For pulling my trailer I'm glad I have the 4.30 gears. I suggest you go with the 4.30 gears also.

I've got 3.73s in my F350 towing 7000# and hauling 2000# TC. It does okay, but as others have stated, I wish I'd gotten 4.10s at least.

To optimize fuel economy on any LDT, I'd like to see a 2 speed rear end, or possibly have OEMs team up with Gear Vendors or US Gear to offer an auxillary tranny as factory installed options. That would be sweet...

Your brain must have gone to the same school as mine. I have been wishing for a 2-speed axle or a Gear Vendors or other aux transmission for a long time. It makes perfect sense. Trucks used to have these years ago, but somehow they went out of vogue. An aux tranny could go in between the main tranny and the 4wd transfercase so 4wd can be available in any gear with no need for a 4wd lockout feature (just something else to go wrong).

A 4.88 or even 5.38 low axle ratio and an aux tranny with a .70 OD ratio would mean one could have their choice between 4.88 and 3.42, or 5.38 and 3.77. Or it could be done the other way around using an underdrive ratio in the aux trans, say 1.2. Then a 3.73 axle would become 4.48 when the underdrive is kicked in.

A 3-speed aux tranny would be cool too, with a .90 OD, a 1.0 direct and a 1.1 underdrive. So a 4.10 would be 3.69 in OD and 4.51 in UD. Or, with .85 OD and 1.15 UD ratios, a 4.10 would be 3.49 in OD and 4.72 in UD.

Someone needs to revive the old 'brownie' transmissions of years ago! For use with a manual main tranny, a regular brownie manual unit would be perfect. Add some synchros to modernize it and it would be good to go.

For an automatic main tranny, it would need to be built hydraulic like the Gear Vendors so the main tranny doesn't need a clutch to operate it. The problem with the GV is there's no grade braking unless it's in direct drive. Somehow that problem would have to be solved so engine braking works in all gears.

Good Luck!

Maybe while towing but running empty on the highway 4.10's would get much better mpg than 4.88's.

I have the dodge V10 with the 4.1 and it doesn't pull like i would expect. I can pull fine all day with the over drive off. I have to pull at 55 with the rpm at 2500 rpm. but it will do almost any hill 6-8%. I was hoping to do 60-65 on flats but i can't do it in overdrive. maybe somthing is wrong with my truck. Oh forgot to say i am pulling about 6000# camper is all.
