Had a short in the main breaker box. This was in the area that feeds the breakers (the power strip that all the breakers tie into). Well because it was in front of the breakers they did not trip until they got hot. By that time the damage was done - the housing had melted and the insulation on the wires was toast. Has anybody else had this happen to them? ..... I was running a surge protector.

I'm assuming your dealer fixed it? I personnaly have not had any electrical issues in any of the Jayco's we're owned, so it must have been a bad box!

I had two cords replaced after a little melting/discoloration of a prong on my 30 amp cord. I attributed it to two bad receptacles at the campground I was at when it happened. Everything was fine at next campground I went to. Is there any way to check proper performance of each breaker?

I think you'll find that either you had a loose ground at the bus bar. Or the campground you were at had a recept. Loose grounds can happen new or older. The screws that tighten down the wires vibrate loose in transit then you plug it in and well.... things that are plastic melt. It's a real mess. So while your traveling it sure can't hurt to check your bus bar and have a recept tester for the campground recept.

Yep you nailed it....Its a loose (disconected) ground wire to the bus bar. Scary as it could cause a fire. It never tripped the breakers, I just noticed a funny smell.

Had something similar happen to me except it was more then likely caused by corrosion. I have a junction box in the back where the cord ties into the feeder for the main panel. Some corrosion on the hot caused it to heat up, and melt the insulation between it and the neutral that it crossed over, causing a dead short. Smoked and melted all the plastic in the box, even had a little arc to the metal cover. Left me cussing as I tried stuffing a stranded and solid #10 in the same wire nut. Now I have the parts to put a twist lock outlet on this upcoming weekend, no more wire nut splice for me.
