Great story!! I will be doing the same thing at the end of September, but picking up a Jayco Melbourne at RV Direct. I will be returning via I-80 to Sacramento. Thanks for the info on I-80 in the Rockies. I am curious as to what kind of condition the highway is in. I have heard good and bad.
I have a notoriously bad sense of directions. I am fortunate that my wife has a photographic memory and recalls every road she has ever driven over. Otherwise, I would still be trying to find my way out of Glendale. She tells me that the I-70 crosses the divide. OK, call it whatever you want but I call it a challenge. She’s the navigator but I’m the driver.
The roadbed is in very good condition however, keeping in mind that our ancestors experienced unfathomable hardships trying to canvass The Great Divide, make your way with a plan.
Make sure your passage occurs in daylight hours. Make sure the breaks on your vehicle are in EXCELLENT condition. Allow for at least one extended stop to take a break.
You will pass through a national treasure that rivals Yosemite or the Smoky Mountains. Take your time and spend a night or two – if you have the time - at one of the many campgrounds along the I-70 in the Divide.
Thanks for the info. I will probably go by way of I-80. I expect the rest stops will be for and few in between on the west side of the Mississippi. Glad you made it back safely.

Interstate 80 rest stops in Iowa and Nebraska are between 30 and 50 miles apart. That could be a lot farther than what you normally expect as both states are long.
It took us nearly 10 hours to travel the I-80 through Nebraska and we were making great time. The I-80 through Nebraska has light traffic, is in excellent condition and very straight.
The traffic through Lincoln and Omaha was very light. In fact, there was very light traffic and straight stretches of highway from the eastern suburbs of Denver.
Thank you, Cosmokies. We had a wonderful trip. I would do all again. But next time I would spend more time in Nebraska. The I-80 is a guided tour through the history of the Old West.
