I'm taking the kids on their first trip to Yellowstone. I plan to stop first between Grand Teton and Yellowstone park and then probably move to West Yellowstone.
Any suggestions on good campgrounds in the area? Probably not planning on camping right in the park as I am not sure I could get reservations at this point (looking to be there about Aug 4-11).
If you need hookups, then outside the park it is. ( yeah I know about Fishing bridge, but this is last minute) If not, there may be a chance to get a site inside Yellowstone, like at Madison.
Staying in West is great, cuz it's a neat town, the Bear/Wolf habitat is great, and you are only 45 minutes from either Norris basin, and Old Faithful.
Best place is Grizzly RV park.

We stayed at Coulter Bay which is near the north end of the Teton's. You probably would not need reservations at that time of the year. There are no hook up unless you stay in the commercial campground at this location.

Early August is still in high tourist season, so a reservation is a VERY good idea. (We were at Grizzly early this month and they were turning people away who had showed up w/o reservations.) Grizzly is an excellent suggestion for West Yellowstone, but if the kids would like a pool, the KOA may be better. (On the other hand, chances are you'll be spending all day and into the evening in the park, making a pool unnecessary.)
Colter Bay area has 2 CGs, as dbbls mentioned: a private CG with hookups, and a NPS CG without them. Both nice, though the NPS CG will have larger sites. Both heavily wooded (pines). Probably the best choice for GTNP.
Thanks for the advice so far. I should mention the "kids" are 17-23 so we'll probably be doing rafting, fishing, and hiking in the park. A pool or kiddie activities are not really a requirement at this point.
