In August we will be "dry" camping with no hook-ups. Is it safe to use a Coleman lamp inside the pup? It is a model which burns Coleman fuel, not propane.
If the answer is "no", then why is it safe to use the pup's 3 burner propane stove inside?

It is safe as long as you keep a roof vent open and/or the plastic on a window partly unzipped. If you check your owners manual, you'll probably find they say to take the same precautions when using the stove.
And needless to say, safe to use the lantern as long as it's attended, and not near anything flammable (canvas, clothes, towels, etc.)

Coleman says NO.

3 burner is designed/approved for indoor use.
Hard to knock over the 3 burner
“We don't know the cause of death, but there was a knocked-over propane lantern in the tent, which was tightly closed and dark.”

Coleman makes a few nice Battery-Operated lanterns that would get my vote for safety.

We have this lantern and it works great. It even has a remote control. We hang it outside on remote so we can turn it on from inside the PUP if we hear anything going on at night and need to see. Of course, it also works great inside, nice and safe.

I believe as long as it is in a supervised area and away from flammables it is OK. We don't however, use ours in the PUP. We have a Coleman rechargeable light we use inside, and new this year a Black & Decker rechargeable work light that we like.

Way back in the olden days with out first couple of PU's we used both a Coleman Lantern and their Mushroom Coleman fuel catayltic heater in the campers.
BUT we fired them up outside and brought them in once they were burning correctly; and left plenty of ventilation open.

They can be used safely inside, if caution is used with respect to proper ventilation. They do get hot above the lantern (ever grabbed the handle that wasn't pushed down? I have!) Gas buring lights have been used indoors for a long time. Not all that long ago, many RVs came with propane lights.
Having said that, We choose to use the gas lantern outside and battery operated one inside our RV.
If you do use it, I would build a base or hanging bracket that will ensure it won't get tipped over. That alone will keep, imho, about 80% of the chances for an accident away.

While growing up, our family used the same Coleman heater and lantern in our pup and we lived to tell the tale. There wasn't much choice in the late 60's/early 70's like there is today. Nowadays, I have a remote controlled battery powered LED lantern from Cabela's (about $30.00) and the pup has a furnace in case it gets too cold using extra blankets. Used properly, the Coleman fueled things are great but IMHO there are better choices for inside a pup. If I didn't have a furnace in the trailer, I would get better sleeping bags .
Just be safe and ventilate.
