Anyone recently taken the ferry with a truck/TC from the vancouver area to the island? Just wondering what BCF is going to bend us over for so we can plan for it

Tried that and called up bc ferries before posting too - but they implied the fees could vary; I may get dinged for the oversize rate (truck & tc are 20'6 long and 9'8 high); or not depending on the mood of the terminal person... "well it's not a motorhome but it's not a truck either". So it sounds like I need to budget on the 70 + 3.50 for the extra foot + 2 adults @ 11.30 + 5.65 for the youngun (heh, I suppose I should go recheck, they probably are going to ding me for the dogs too eh?).

Ask for a round trip special fare when you go over. If you don't, you'll pay the same coming and going. If you get one, you'll save. I think you can find the details on their web site.
PS, you don't have to use the same end points to get the savings.

That 'Round Trip Special' only refers to the circle route that you can do by including the ferries on the sunshine coast.

B.C. Ferries will charge your truck and camper for "overheight" which restrick the parking opportunities for it once on the ferry. Travellers these days are all getting the "fuel surcharge" for all vehicles; this has been increased lately. I haven't got their faire schedule in front of me, but I suggest you acurately measure and note your vehicle's length and tell them that number once you get to a toll booth. Unless you have a pop-up, Alaskan-type camper the overheight charge will stand for the entire length of your rig. If you ask for a "Circle Pass" once you get to the first toll booth you are elegible for a discount that can also limit some backtracking that you might take to get you back on to the same ferry route. For instance, you can leave for Sydney on Vancouver Island and recross the Strait of Georgia from Comox on Vancouver Island. This would give you access to the Sunshine Coast on B.C.'s mainland and give you two additional ferry trips that skirt the fiords of Jervis Inlet and Howe Sound, terminating about 15 miles from Vancouver.

Whether you're a motorhome or truck makes no difference, it's all about the size of your vehicle.
At work, our guys frequently take the ferry with their trucks. The fellow with the F-350 crewcab dually can squeeze on as underheight (by an inch only) but is overlength. If he's carrying a tall load in his box, he becomes overheight.
You are overheight and 6" overlength. If it was us, we'd be declaring the extra 6" for all the difference it makes in the cost. BC Ferries often gives a 1' leeway, so you may get away with paying just overheight and not the overlength.
No charge for the dog, and dogs usually get a cookie at the tollbooth ... ours has come to expect it now.
BTW ... ferry costs are increasing in the near future. I think 10-18% depending on the route.

You've pretty much figured out how much you'll pay extra for being overheight and for the extra feet of length. Then it's an extra charge for each person.
The fares are going up again (fuel surcharges), so here are some ways to save some dough: I've heard of people 'hiding' in the M/H!!! Not sure what would happen if you got caught, but you could always just sit on the pooper! LOL! Also, I've heard of some people letting a little air out of their tires when they have a roof rack or a slightly raised vehicle that would be close to overheight. Obviously, that won't work with an RV, but it's a good trick worth mentioning!
You can reserve, but I would skip that and just ensure you come and go during the week, and you'll be fine. Tsawwassen is a better terminal, too.
Have fun!

Ahh, so much good info!
What's the fuel surcharge currently running? Of course there's no mention of it on the website...
