Thanks for all the great help. My challenge, now, is to try to understand all the advice an apply it. I'm almost tempted to just order a new carb, just because I have little confidence in my ability to follow the directions.
I know I can have the carb in my hand in a matter of 5 minutes, but being able to find the jets and clean them is still up in the air.
If you now want to throw up your hands and say this guy is really dumb, I'll understand.

I do about a zillion small carbs in the spring, boatdoc, and your Honda is no different. Take it off, get the float bowl off and spray the pilot jet out with the carb cleaner spray can. Then use compressed air and blow it though every passage you see and my guess it will run like new. I'm talking 1/2 hour at the most!!! Don't buy a new carb. The problem is the low speed/ pilot jet is close to plugged. Once you get it fixed, you will, run stabil in the fuel ALL the time and don't use any fuel older than 6 months no matter what the battle says. You don't need any luck, just take it apart!!!

Mine was doing something like yours. With the carb apart, look into the engine side of the carb. On the right side of the throat you will see 3 small holes. Get some spray carb cleaner in them. Not saying that is the same problem you have, but it worked for me.

SeaFoam is so good at dissolving "lacquer" left behind from evaporated fuel that you might get by by dosing the tank heavily with the foam, set your choke so it runs semi smoothly. Put a small load on it like a room heater and let it run awhile. If its gunk in the carb, it may dissolve it. If it's trash you'll have to pull the bowl.
