I'm going to go I78 to I287 to I287/87 across the tappan zee to I95. Does this sound about right? I want to avoid the cross bronx expressway. Any other suggestions?
We live in CT and are not fans of I-95 in NY or southern CT. Combined with the Tappan Zee the traffic is very unpredictable. I would get I-84 in PA thru NY and into CT. Beyond Waterbury, CT and before Hartford take 691 to 91 towards New Haven. At New Haven take 95 to Mystic. This route avoids the perils of southern CT traffic. But then again no travels in CT are much fun.
I would take rt.84 to rt.9 south about 20 miles before Hartford. Follow rt9 all the way to the end and it merges onto rt95N toward Mystic. This would be your least traffic and good Highway. No NY and no New Haven or Hartford. I travel this way with MH and Toad often.

We went from Lebanon, PA to Mystic a couple of years ago and when we hit 95 at the NY CT line everything stopped. I'd take the alternates suggested above. Have a great trip.
Taking I-84 will add about 50 miles to my trip, but as I think about this, I would be hitting the Tappen Zee about 9 am. I do not think that would be good.
As mentioned on here...would go 81 to 78 to 287 north to 87 north to Newburgh,NY and get 0n 84East into ct to 691 on the eastside of waterbury...go 691 to 91 North to exit 22;???; but it says Rt 9 South to 95 north...to Mystic.....all you have to worry about is getting a speeding ticket on Rt 9,4 lane hwy ,with no trafic..have a great trip...Chuck
