As a New Hampshire Police Officer, I see all types of Rv's going up the interstate as I-95 runs through our community. I also travel it often myself off duty. Although NH has a mandatory trailer inspection law for any trailers over 3,000 Lbs very few garages and few of my fellow police officers know about it. I've often wondered how many pieces of junk that go rolling by at 65 or so mph are really safe for the road. Some of the units are 20-30 yrs. old and look like they belong more in a salvage yard than on the way to a campground. NH issues an inspection sticker and a printout of the inspection results but these are to be kept in the glovebox. I would like to see some type of decal or sticker placed near the license plate so that I could tell if a NH trailer was safe for the road, even if they just checked lights, brakes, tires. That would be a start. Even a brand new trailer could have a brake problem. And how many of us are really anal about keeping our tire pressures up to the sidewall specs? I look upon it as a form of cheap insurance for my piece of mind. I am truly sorry for the loss of the gentleman from Goffstown,NH and my thoughts go out to his family.

Well no where in the article does it talk about what caused the accident other then to say there was a sway event. If in fact there was a sway event all the driver had to do was reach down to the RV brake controller and apply full trailer brakes without letting up on the accelerator and this would have pulled the TT back in line and ended the sway event altogether, preventing the accident altogether. If sway in fact was the cause!
The fact that he didn’t use his seat belt if they are not required in the State of NH says more for the State then the driver. Maybe the Governor of this Joke of a State should get sued by the Family. Note to self never go to NH!

So sad!!! Seatbelt do save lives!!! After bad accident as a teenager and head hitting the windshield, I have not traveled without mine since them. That was over 40 yrs ago now so you can tell I learned my lesson well. We do not start the engine until everyone is buckled in.

NH may not have a law that requires seat belt use but I am pretty sure they do not have a law forbidding it. At some point you still have to take responsibility for your own actions.

I agree. The fact that a state does not require use of seat belts is a great reason to not go there.

I would encourage you not to paint such a broad stroke across a great state. In fact I am slightly insulted by such a ridiculous comment.
New Hampshire is a very scenic state with caring, conserving and generous people. In fact, NH has some of the most generous donation ratio's in the country and has thousands of acres of prestine mountians and forest preserved under National/state parks.

OK....this thread is going way out of control.
If the deceased was wearing his seatbelt, this thread would not exist. Period.
As for State bashing and the freedom to wear or not to wear a seatbelt I feel should be started in another thread.
This poor family is fatherless....who knows...maybe he was wearing his seatbelt, and he took it off for a second or two to lean over and kiss his wife or turn around and swat at the kids to be quiet....
We are campers here....let just end this thread and be happy campers.

I lived in Litleton NH, many years ago and it truly is a beautiful state. That said:
Here in CA there has been a seat belt law for many years. When I read about traffic deaths, it is often as a result of one or more of the passengers or driver not wearing seat belts.. But, how could they be driving without their seat belt fastened when it is against the law??
Does the law make people wear their seatbelts? Not really. OK perhaps it made many people get into the habit of buckling up and this is a good thing. But like speed limits.. Common sense is the ultimate determination, and this varies between drivers. (Boy is that an UNDERSTATEMENT!) and that includes those driving RVs!

When I was in the military, we were told that if we did not wear seat belts while driving or reflective vests/helment while on a motorcycle, that the Navy could refuse to pay your medical expenses if you were injured.
That was incentive enough for me to be safe.
I wonder what would happen if insurance companies had the right to refuse payment if you chose not to try to prevent an injury by not wearing a seat belt?
Would more people wear protective equipment?
I do feel for the man's family. My own father sometimes does not put in his seat belt. If I am with him I will not move the vehicle until he puts on his belt, and I also get my children to hassle him about it.

I agree. Regardless of what caused the accident, the real tragedy was not taking the precaution of wearing the seat belt that might have have prevented this tragedy. Unlimited freedom does not trump common sense.
Oh yeah, nice trailer!
Hey, that looks like a familiar setup. ha Ours is a new addition to the family and we love it. It makes us want to gear up and head out.
