I know, it's probably right in your backyard, but have you tried Lincoln's New Salem SP yet? It's been years since we've been there, which means the trees are bigger (and therefore the shade is better) but it's a decent park, and the New Salem village is fun to spend the day exploring.
I would suggest Nauvoo on the Mississippi River. The old town of Nauvoo is quit interesting even if you are not Mormon. There is a state park their for camping, and a visitors center. The drive along the river south of town is very scenic.

Right - Nauvoo SP is quite nice. No showers, but they do have elec sites. No res's; try to get there midweek if you can. Right now is pageant time so tough to get a site, but fall would be a wonderful time to camp there!
There is a great campground in Hopedale, IL. It is called Kentuckiana. We have parked our trailer there on a seasonal site. The only drawback is that they don't have a pool for swimming. Although, they do have a live country opry show every saturday night that is included in the camping fees. Also, the camping fees are only $25 per night for full hook-up. They do charge $2 extra if you want to run you air conditioner.
We just camped at Siloam Springs State Park east of Quincy. We stayed in the camping loop that had large pine trees to park amongst. It was a nice quiet park.

Try Camplakewood in Effingham,IL or I would try Rend Lake there are 5 campgrounds on the lake Wayne Fitzgearld SP is all 1st come 1 serve and The rest are South Marcum, Gun Creek (closest to golf course) South Sandusky, and North Sandusky and you can get more info on recreation.gov for these and WFSP on the ILL DNR site. South Marcum is my favorite. They have boat ramps available around the lake and also have boat rentals fishing & Pontoons.
Hope you enjoy trip. Happy Trails

Try Two Rivers Marina & Campground. It is just across from Louisinna, MO in IL. They have a pool, nice restaurant. It is a large marina right on the river. We could watch boats & barges go up & down the river.
Also mny small towns in IL have small camping areas in town or just outside by a lake. You would have to contact each town. I know Roodhouse, IL has one on lake. Lived there many years ago, went back for visit a couple of yers ago.

but you can be immature forever!
I always put in a plug for Sangchris Lake state park, only 20 minutes outside of town. The Hickory Point campground, on the lake -- but it's always filled on the weekends so you'd need to go out before a Friday.
In the St. Louis area we love Babler state park. It's an easy drive to Six Flags, and it has a very large pool and nice biking/hiking trails.
