It looks like the wife and I are going to spend a week in East Harbor State Park in Ohio next week. Does anyone have some do not miss this attraction or activities.
FISH! Some of the best walleye and smallmouth bass fishing in the world is in the waters of the western basin of Lake Erie. If you have a boat, bring it. If not, hire a charter boat and bring home some delicious walleye for dinner.

Had to post because we stayed at East Harbor the first night after we purchased out trailer. We bought it on ebay (new) from Terrytown in Grand Rapids. I thought East Harbor was a nice park and (not being from around the great lakes) was impressed by Lake Eire. As for things to do, I don't think Cedar Point is too far away, if you like that sort of thing. Maybe a tour of Marblehead lighthouse?

Make sure that you go see the Marblehead lighthouse! It is the longest operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes. Follow Rt. 163 east into Marblehead.
If you go west on Rt. 2 for about 20 minutes, you will come to Crane Creek State Park, and the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. They are adjacent to each other, both with boardwalk and other hiking trails through marshes, and wetland areas, with many water birds and other migratory birds.
You can take a ferry ride to both Kelley's Island and South Bass Island. There are ferrys available from Catawba, Port Clinton and Sandusky. Taking your bikes with you on the ferry to get around on each island is a great idea. They also have golf carts and bikes available for rent on either island. They each have nice state parks on the island.
Kelley's Island (the quieter island of the two) has huge deep glacial grooves in the rocks at the north end of the island. South Bass Island (a "party" island at night)has the town of Put-In-Bay with the longest bar in the world, and Perry's Monument, with a 317 foot high observation deck. The monument is a tribute to Oliver Hazard Perry's victory in Lake Erie in the War of 1812. Perry's Monument
Of course, there is also Cedar Point nearby, in Sandusky. It is a wonderful amusement park with great roller coasters.
Even if you don't go fishing in the lake to catch your own, make sure you go somewhere for a wonderful perch or walleye dinner. Best fish ever!
Have fun at Lake Erie! It is Ohio's playground, and Ohio's north coast!
Hi smsmith! We're heading to East Harbor on Sunday and will be there a week too! We will be on site B14 if you want to stop in and say "Hi"! Our plans are going to be Cedar Point, Put in Bay - Perrys Memorial, African Safari Wildlife Park, Marblehead Lighthouse, swim, ride bikes and RELAX!! I think maybe there is a Maritime museum in Sandusky too. We are looking forward to it and we're now in the count down mode!!
Head to the islands for the day. Kelley's is a little more laid back, Put-In-Bay is more partyish, Middle Bass has St. Hazards which is an island community.

Cedar Point/Ohio Vacation
Category: Travel and Places
We just got back from a week in Ohio, camped at East Harbor State Park. What a great place, right on Lake Erie and centrally located within 30 minutes of so many things to do. Our campsite was a nice size and backed up to the trees and beyond that the lake. We had a family of skunks whom I named the teenager Peppe as is Le Pew lol They were quite use to people and raided our trash several times and would look at us sniff the air then wander away. Thank goodness nothing stinky occurred, I kept them happy with fruit and veggies each night.
Cedar Point is a great amusement park with 17 roller coasters. I spent my time cruising in my electric scooter since my ankle was still in the air cast. Restricted my ride choices a bit but I had a great time none the less. Bill and Alana went and did their thing so Chocolate (classroom moose mascot) rode around in my scooter basket and got on the rides with me as well. Ahhh I even got a bit daring drinking beer in the saloon there while I watched a show and really had fun driving my scooter after that. Hmm does anybody know if you can get a DWI on an electric scooter lol ??
Downtown Sandusky is beautiful, they had this huge clock made out of live flowers and plants that actually told the time. Ive seen one up in Niagara Falls as well. I went to the Merry-Go-Round Museum there as well and it was very interesting. Amazing how much history and workmanship goes into each carved creation over the years. I will look at each carousel in a new light that's for sure. Hey if you happen to get to Sandusky make sure you stop by the New Sandusky Fish Company down on the water about 1 block off of Water St. behind West Marine. A local gentleman that worked at the museum suggested I go there for lunch. The Perch sandwich was fantastic, ended up taking Bill and Alana there the next day.
Marblehead State Park is the home of the Marblehead Lighthouse which is still in operation today. What a beautiful area, and free to the public. You can take tours weekdays 1:00 till 5:00 I do believe though I was unable to walk up the steps I loved walking around the grounds.
Put-In-Bay is an island that is a cross between South Beach and New Orleans lol. My dear chat friend Tim, his wife Peggy and nephew Josh surprised me with a visit (they live in Ohio)over the weekend. We all took the ferry to the island and had a great time. Tim made sure I made it safely through the cave we toured Bill had the time of his life driving us all around on a 6 person golf cart. If there was a way he may have tried to sneak that cart off the island lmao. We had a nice lunch and even tried fried pickles which turned out to be pretty darn good Tim and I really wanted to get us a bucket of drinks but it didnt work out (this time around anyway!) so we sat down and had a couple of drinks and people watched. OMG the sites you see on a weekend that's all Im gonna say lol. Tim and his family came back on Sunday and we spent the day at the beach on Lake Erie right in the park. Huge sandbars, you can walk out as far as you like and it doesnt go past your chest. Nice breeze, good friends and a great way to spend the day!
The trip home was a long one but went smoothly. Ahhh did you know there are quite a few Starbucks along Interstate 80/Ohio Turnpike Great trip, Im sure we will make it back that way again one of these days.
