We use nothing but a stove-top percolator and have great coffee. The only thing you have to do is grind your beans to 'perc size' instead of drip. With drip grind you get a lot of extra chewy in your coffee because it is too finely ground.

so the $7.00 old fashioned coffee pot at WalMart will work just fine if you use the right coffee, perc size?

We just returned from a month long PUP trip. We spent some of the time with hook-ups and some without. We took 6 lbs of good coffee ground for drip and 3 lbs of the same coffee ground courser for the percolator.
When we don't have electrical hook-ups our first pot is from the percolator (we set it up the night before, lean out of bed in the morning and light the stove and wait for it to perk) for the second and/or third pot we turn on the generator and make drip. The drip coffee is quicker and we use a metal insulated coffee pot so it stays warm. If we have electricity we just make drip. The percolator coffee is just as good if you do it right, but it does take longer. I must say that nothing smells better then the first pot of coffee brewing (either way).
My husband and I love our coffee and we usually only make one 12 cup pot. On this trip we had 4 other adults tent camping with us, so we really went through a lot of coffee.

I love our stainless steel insulated French press. I have the Bodum. I kinda get excited about getting to use it again as I'm packing for a pup trip. Best coffee ever, but the press lives in the pup with the camping gear since we use an electric drip at home and I'm too cheap to buy another Bodum.

Bumpy;
The only thing we did was go up to the bigger size perc from our original pot. I think the original was from Canadian Tire in about 1975 or so and the replacement came from Wally. Can't remember the price, but it is a nine cupper.

We do the same. Better coffee than at home with the dripilator.
Make sure the coffee is ground coarse.
