While that engine is litterally screeming at the top of its rpm, trying to climb out from under that hood. While that behemouth is still back there behind you trying to pull & slide you back down that hill. Then,... when you reach the top, looking over all of the needles on the high end of the gages/ You fell relieved, then only to realize that there is a lot more of thoes little grades ahead, and all day along. That evening when you pull in to camp, wore to a frazel, there is this guy next door with a 5th 3-4 foot longer than yours. Who just happens to own a diesel telling you relaxed, truthfully, on how easy it was, "I did not know it was back there", he says with a smile. Like a lot of thoes above who says sure you can, go ahead. I had to ask myself then, just what kind of a vacation was I on on.
Well I have eveything except the hemi...I have a magnum and the post above describes my towing experience to a tee!
Doesn't describe my experience at all. We tow a 10.040 lb actual weight high profile 5th wheel with our Hemi powered 2500HD. I set the cruise at 65mph on the interstates and 58~mph on the back roads where traffic and speed limits allow. It runs in direct most of the time with some shifting to and from O/D on rolling hills as the '05 has no way of locking out both O/D ratios. On the steeper uphills, it runs in 2nd at peak torque 4200rpm with plenty of power around the southeast. 19,000 rpm in a Formula One race car is screaming. 4200rpm is a subtle roar just 30% higher than the diesels pulling a similar load up an equal incline. I don't burst into tears at the sound of an engine running in it's powerband. If you do, chances are you wouldn't be happy with it. Cringe factor is not an engine weakness. It's a driver perception problem. I have neither. I went from my fourth Cummins powered Ram to the Hemi powered Ram. I have no regrets.
'05 2500HD Dodge 5.7L Hemi 5spd auto/3.73 SLT. 95k miles
ex '95 Cummins,'98 12v Cummins,'01.5 Cummins,'03 Cummins
'07 KZ Jag 28JFSS.
I also have a 04 2500 hemi reg cab 4x4 3.73 gears and auto trans. I pull a 24ft dutchmen TT it might weight 5000lbs. We go to the nascar races in Texas and Kansas City. I drive 65mph and get 7.5mpg. Im also looking at the 27ft wildcat and the 27ft croosroads cruiser 5th wheels. I love the truck and the high rpms sound awsome with the new exaust and airaid intake. I live near Wichita kansas. I only have 26,500 miles on it so the diesel is not an option now, maybe in 25 years when we retire.
