Good day, all.
Does anybody know if it is a common practice in the RV retail industry to execute "dealer trades" to obtain a unit that they don't have but can be found on another dealer's lot, much like what happens in the automobile industry? I'd like to shop local but don't know if I will be restricted to bartering for the stuff on their lot only or have to order what I want straight from the factory even though the one I want is not that far away.
Based on many of the comments on the forums I want to shop local to ensure I have a good local source for any service work I need.
Thanks
L.

RV dealers are not like Auto dealers. They dont do dealer trades.

Like RedRamMan said it's very unusual, unless it's the same company's dealer just a different location. That's how ours was. It was at one location but I wanted to buy it from a different location so they transferred it to the location I wanted.

We still see no reason to pay an extra $4000 (or extra anything) to "buy locally." Didn't three years ago and still don't now.

I have found in the past that "buying locally" can be a real financial pain if the dealer figures he's got you over a barrel. We had this problem when we bought our original coleman westlake popup, and again when we went to the nearest Starcraft dealer for our ck19. When they started talking price we told them what we could get from the wholesaler near Atlanta. They came down pretty close to what we would have paid for the wholesaler and the trip up and back to bring it home.

I wouldn't pay thousands more to buy from a local dealer. If you can get them down close to a wholesaler then maybe. As far as warranty is concerned, the manufacturer will steer you towards someone that will take care of any issues that may arise. I have never had our ROO in for warranty work. It was in recently for a Dometic frig. recall and that's the only time our rig has seen a dealership. Not where we bought it either.

The dealer I bought mine from got it from another dealer in OH for me. Basically the other dealer sold it to my dealer for the invoice price.

There are no wholesalers, only dealers who choose to sell a lot of trailers at a lower margin. RVWholesalers is not a distributor (wholesaler), they're a dealer. ANY dealer can sell at their prices and still make money.

5 years ago when we bought the TravelStar 19CK, I had shopped online at the 'wholesale' dealers, brought that quote with me to the local dealer, and make a long story short, it only took to visits to his manager to come back within $200. my wife thought that was very fair, for even then at $1.50 a gallon for gas it would have cost us more to go to Ohio for the 'wholesale' price, plus I then worked out a package deal for the WD hitch and Brake control plus some other 'goodies'(bunk lights, hoses, cords, chairs etc).
In the end we were all set up including installation for the brake control, and 7 pin plug on the TV for about $400 to %500 more than just the unit at the 'wholesalers'.
If you are fair going into the dealer, the transaction has to be a win win for your and them, they are usually fair to you.
Good luck
