Diesel engines will out last any gas engines.

Why are 99% of 18 wheelers diesel?....with a million miles.

Why don't you ask how many diesel owners want to get rid of their diesel trucks and go to gas.

I do agree that gas engines have their place.

We use gas and diesel engines in our parts business. The diesel's have always out performed the gas engines.

Hey Rollin Cool, It took me a little bit to figure out what you were trying to say.

F-Troup gave me a hint!!

Britt

Is this helping any?

Have I missed anything in what to consider? I'm trying not to sound like I'm dithering over this, just want to be sure I've not overlooked the obvious.

The diesel has a higher purchase price, but you may be able to recoup some or all of the price difference when you go to sell it.

I think you are pretty close on your summary on both types. I MUCH prefer the diesel and mine has over 200,000 miles and still looks and runs like new. I have replaced brakes, front end components, and rear end components, but still on the original engine and transmission. I think any truck, gas or diesel, would have the same things replaced after that many miles. I would not give up the towing performance of the diesel for a gas truck now that I have towed with both.

I'm guessing your thinking new truck ?? Have you considered a 5 or 6 year old truck. Some of the last 7.3 PSD's/early DMAX and '03/'04 HPCR Dodge/Cummins getting some great mpg (20+) on long commutes. Which brings up another question. Is this truck a commuter or dedicated tow truck for your RV ?? Also those 5 or 6 years old 8.1 GM's or Fords V-10 gassers are priced way on down the hill (dirt cheap).

I was going to say the diesel gets better mileage pulling and unloaded, but looks like about 10 people beat me to it. I was next to a fellow in the Joplin KOA with a V-10 Ford, he said unloaded he got 10 mpg and 6 to 8 loaded. I was getting 9 to 11 pulling a much heavier 5er and running 75 up and down the hills across MO. The funny thing was though, even at 65 up and down hills I got 9 to 11 mpg also. Unloaded I am getting 15 to 19 depending on how much city driving I do. These new Cummins 6.7's love to tow, and they are cheap as all get out right now, most are going for around 30Kish for a 50k truck.

For Dodge/Chevy try calling Dave Smith in Kellog, Idaho. Not too far from South Dakota in your sig. Having an exhaust brake is awesome with a diesel. I'm at 19.3k GCVW, rarely touch vehicle brakes in the mountains.

The Dodge lifetime warranty excludes Diesels.

I've owned both. I miss my 05 Duramax when towing, also averaged around 3 mpg better mileage. I DON't miss the nasty fuel filter changes every 10k miles & 10 qt oil changes. From what I understand on the new diesels with the emissions junk, mileage is down from just a few years ago....
