We will be heading up 8/14 what should we know ahead of time to help make are stay better (hoses leveling blocks) is diesel fuel around any good fishing boats, night life, better restaurants. Just trying to make the most out of this trip most likley the last one for the year due to surgery on my shoulder.
Spent a few days there last Fall....no bugs. Try the Koffee Kove restaurant in Clayton. Also, the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton is a must see. Go to Alexandria Bay for nightlife.
We stayed their this time last year, was not a campground I would ever recommend, or would I ever go back to.
The employees were nice, the owners, no so much... The place needs allot of work, which to be fair to the owners, I think they are trying to do. The pool was in bad shape (needed a new liner and general maint.) but had a lot of bugs in it all the time, which could not be helped.
The CG has a place to eat, but was never open the entire time we were their. We kind of complained about it becuase we were tolf it would be open when we called them initially, but it got us no results. They had a bad attitude.
The CG is not a kid friendly place if your traveling with kids, the playground sucked and the CG had no activities at all. However there was a lot to do in the area for kids.
Within a 20 mile area was a great farm that was educational and nice for a day trip. Up by the border was a few cool places for kids. The office did have a nice layout of local events and places of interest.
Because of the way the campground is situated on the lake, the bugs and the smell, real bad. Hopefully things have gotten better and you will not have these issues. The little black fly’s were really bad. We had thousands of them around all the time.
The area is awesome. (Alexandria Bay was nice...) There are a lot of great places to go north of the campground on the lake. Diesel was all over the place as I remember... Was not much in the way of fishing as I remember, but I was not really looking to go fishing... Lots of great places to eat however. Never had a bad meal anywhere. There is a army base north of the CG (as I remember it) that had a Wal-Mart, etc.. Not bad.
They also play games with access cards and deposits so watch yourself and plan ahead if your leaving when the office is not open.
Good luck.

Fishing is right off the island or you can go for a charter in Henderson Harbor. Actually some of the best Bass & Walleye fishing in the east. Awesome sunsets. About 20 mi from Watertown 35 from the border on the St Lawrence. Take a trip to the east toward Lowville and see the giant wind farm. Some nice little restaurants in Sacketts Harbor and the battlefield
Just got back and agree with most of the comments above. The location is beautiful, but the campground needs work. As mentioned, there are no activities for kids and the playground is limited. The restaurant/bar on site is no longer open. Bring extra hoses if possible, many of the lakeview lots allow you to pull or back in (for views) but you will need long hoses to extend to the services. The cable stations are very limited, so bring satellite if possible. The bugs can be horrible, depending on the wind (which at times is very strong). They have water fleas(?) which swarm depending on the wind and get all over everything. If you like fishing, and don't go out on a boat, don't waste your time in the marina or inlet. Go over to the bridge on the entrance road, the bass catching there is good. By no means would I consider the campground a 5W rated.
Just got back from this campground ditto everything EmmaTJsMom1 said. We will not return. It is not worth a 5 star rating or money. Very overpriced for what you get. But you do get to say you camped on an Island.
If you always do what you always did; you'll always get what you always got. Try something new!
