now that I have my new to me TC it looks like I need some help in the rear end....what is y'alls opinion air bags or helper springs? my 1 ton already has an overload spring setup from the factory and I really don't want to make the ride any rougher than it already is (unloaded) so I'm leaning towards air bags.....that said my truck is an 04 would I need new shocks? what's considered the best shocks for 1 ton trucks? thanks Chris.

LOTS of opinions here.

Your GMC has the single top overload, and a heavy bottom overload, right? You can get heavier top overload packages several places, including here.

moloss,

there is plenty of info on these threads on the merits and usage of bags or springs.

I agree there is lots of information here on springs/airbags. I have the supersrpings on my truck and they work great. You might take a look at them also. Good luck.

I had a 2004 2500 with NO overloads and added Air Bags. They worked OK, but having to maintain at least 10 psi, made the truck a little rough riding.

I now have a 2008 3500 with overloads and Torklift Stable Loads. I like them much better when empty. I also have a Hellwig Anti-Sway bar which is worth the $$.

It doesn't make a diff what you do supersprings or airbags will make the empty ride a little stiffer. If you can get a spring shop to beef up your overloads like I did on my last truck it won't affect the empty ride but will carry more weight for you.

I have Super Springs and like them very well. There is no maintenance to them no worry about bustin an airline and there is no difference in the ride when the TC is not loaded. They are also less expensive.

Oh boy ... this is such a well-worn subject.

I have used air bags on two Dodge trucks and love them. Others hate them. Others swear by helper springs, add-a-leafs, modified bump stops, and other such things. It really depends on your truck, it's current suspension, your camper, the weights involved when loaded and unloaded, and maybe most importantly, your sensibilities as to how you personally define "good" versus "bad", "improved" versus "worse", or whether you like a stiff or more comfortable ride, etc., etc.

As others have suggested, please do a search on this forum and you will literally find days worth of reading material to mull over on this subject. Then you will have to make a decision as to what you want to try (which may please you or disappoint you).

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I use Edelbrock shocks on my rig. I like the fact that there is no 'messin with the dials' on them.

I did however put them on the same time as the supersprings and I did notice about half of the sway was gone but I don't know what they would do without the springs, but I am pleased at what the two accomplished as a team.

I am also looking into putting on timbrens to bring up the arse a little, I'm still just a tad lower in the rear when loaded to go.
