.....................FOX 5 Investigates: Gas-Saving Gadgets
Fox 5 News in Washington, DC featured a segment last night on three gas saving gadgets, tested by Fox News affiliates around the country. Of the three, Scanguage was the winner, simply by providing the driver with instant feedback to adjust driving habits. No real surprise. Click on the video for the news segment.

IMO the feds could do more to promote fuel savings with just the simple step of making fuel consumption readouts required equipment on all cars.
Anyone who's ever had a vehicle with a trip computer displaying instant MPG knows it will change your driving habits.

My 2008 F250 is still new, but the computer mileage readout seems to have no relationship to any fuel mileage numbers that I can figure out. I always divide the actual gallons of gas used from the actual mileage, and it never matches the computer readout. So, trust those mileage computers as much as you think is prudent.

On all 3 of our GMs they are dead on. Even with the programmer on the truck it is extremely accurate. You do have to fill the spout everytime to get a good reference since it kicks off differently everytime.

Do you reset it everytime you fill up?
I've always found that my overhead and ScanGauge are pretty much dead on with hand calculations (usually with a mile). When there is a difference, it can generally be attributed to different things - like fueling at a different station, vehicle angle, inaccuracies in the fuel station pump and the list can go on.
I love my ScanGauge and strongly reconmended it to everyone, even if you don't believe the MPG read out, get for the other gauges and trip features - plus the ability to read and reset OBD Codes. For under $200, it's a great investment.

They're great gadgets. It's fun to see the mpg hit 40+ in my Sprinter, at 30 mph and overdrive. Hasn't made any difference overall, but I've always had a plus driving style.
I suspect many people would benefit from the devices. The first time they put their foot in it and watch their mileage drop 20-50%, they might get the big picture.

You know, I have to look that up. I don't know how or if I can reset it.

I was thinking it was instant mileage so why would it need resetting? If it goes to 99 mpg going down a hill it wouldn't need to be reset. A guess but I have one and have only driven the truck one time since May .

Mine is dead on within .1 mpg of hand calculation every time. As stated earlier make sure to reset every time you fill and keep in mind that it calculates the mpg across the number of miles since the last reset, therefore the number on the display does not indicate what the real time mpg is but the average since the last reset.

When you fill up, goto the 'MPG' readout and then press and hold both buttons until it resets (about 5 sec or so). For the next little bit it can go thru a dramatic up/down range depending on your driving habits, terrain and city/hiway changes.
Sometimes I'll just reset mine while on a long interstate trip, then run for 10-15 miles at say 70 mph, then reset it and run 65 and finally 60 mph - taking note of the difference in MPGs. I've found that my sweet spot is about 63 mph for best efficiency. Of course that can change due to terrain and other factors. I do know that at 70 mph, my X gets some of the worst MPGs - so I usually try to keep at 65. Of course this is not absolute science - just a good estimate of efficiency.
