Planning on taking off just before Labor day and heading east to Mt Rushmore via Wind Cave, Custer State Park, then heading to Yellowstone via Little Bighorn. Have 18 days total. Am wondering if I should leave off Rushmore and just head to Yellowstone and the Tetons. Perhaps I am pushing the window...any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

Custer SP = largest herd of buffalo in the US

One of Custer's Lakes

Then there is Rushmore

You will just have to decide. Don't let me even get started on the Badlands.
Really, no matter what you decide, you will see wonderful places and have a great time doing so.
See my signature for a link to more pictures of the area.

If you're doing Custer and Wind Cave, you may as well add it in. You don't have to spend a whole day there. Go late in the afternoon to walk the trail and stay for the lighting ceremony. You'll be so close, it seems a shame to miss it. Is 18 days enough? Nothing's ever enough, is it? :-)

Almost every poster pushed the window in my opinion.
Our upcoming trip is about a month and we will take four days to get to Glacier N.P. where we will spend three full days, seven full days at Yellowstone, and four days at Grand Teton plus four days to make it back to Chicago.
However, as seniors we just can't drive 500 miles per day like some kids can.

How long will it take you to get there? Does the 18 days include travel time? South Dakota is one of our favorite spots but if you feel you might have to rush, save it for next year's trip.

Life is too short to spend it all in one place!

Decide on Yellowstone OR the Black Hills. With 18 days you will be hard pressed to do both. Besides you will have an excuse to come back.

I totally agree with husker 2. We had 5 days in the Black Hills and 5 days at Yellowstone and left both feeling we had only done them halfway or less. Next time I am planning a month at each place.

Both retired. 1 year until son finishes college, then financial freedom! We lost Max, the Schnoodle after 16 wonderful years but now enjoy Nicklaus Von Schnoodle (Nicky), who is a full time job. Our new Allegro Bay 34 XB is wonderful.

Husker2 has it right on. I would think you're looking at two days of hard driving minimum just to get to Yellowstone. Continue on to the Black Hills and it's another very looong day to get there. You can't do justice to either area in less that a week IMHO, especially if you've never been to either one before.
