I'll second that.
A Good example is California and there gas tax. when it was first passed ALL the monies received was for road maintenance and repair, not any more everybody has there fingers into the pot, and less is going to it's original purposes

State governments already get revenues for road repair/construction from their taxes at the fuel pump.....and now SD is considering "double dipping" by taxing mileage "at the vehicle"?

Double taxation can ramp-up to some real problems when/if the NATIVES GET RESTLESS.

'lock boxed' Now where have I heard that phrase before?

If SD can do it, then it won't be long before the folks in Washington will see it as a way to stick it to everyone, in every state. After all, they want to be "fair"! Yeah, right.

The article in the Rapid City Journal did say that (If I remember right) Oregon and another state were trying out this idea. So...if it got fire underneath it we'd be sure to see a lot of states get on the band wagon.

They have already passed what they will be calling a wheel tax in Wisconsin and Illinois is right behind them. The wheel tax will pay for the roads. I.E. misappropriated highway funds will now be paid by the citizens.

And like anything else the media is picking it up so each and every podunk and metro town are all following suit.

I would find it very hard for SD to pass a any type of law that would allow them to 'affix' ANYTHING to a persons personal property though.

Why?
Goverments can pretty much do what they want if we let them. Our gov just signed a bill to limit the pay to state workers to Federal minimum wage ---NOT California minimum wage which is higher than the rest of the country! I guess I better quit as this might be construed as political

SD Some counties in SD already have a wheel tax. Pennington County is mulling over that tax as well, but it was shelved until next year....just a matter of time. I think the "pay as you drive" would be state and not county. So in time we'll have a county wheel tax plus the extra "pay as you drive" tax and the high fuel tax.

And then (as now) people will drive less which will = less taxes so they'll whine they aren't getting what they want, and raise the tax again. Pretty soon we'll be back to horse and buggy days!

Yup and sadly today most of the people of the US have just that same attitude and sit back and do nothing.

I find ot VERY disturbing how many rights are slowing being taken away that are protected by the constitution and no one speaks up, yet they will sit glued to the TV watching the ridiculous escapades of low life drunk and drugged celebrities like Britney Spears and such and continue to fund the rag magazines that report it all.

Well, one thing is for sure.. Most people today could not cope with anything even close to the great depression. As bad as that was, people learned from it. I am not saying we need another one but I wonder how these younger people would cope. They would have to "grow up" pretty quickly.
