Planning trip to my neighbor state, New Mexico, to visit in-laws. Heron Lake SP would be good place for us to stay.

Anybody have comments on the park?

Heron is a beautiful SP. I always stop there when close by. Good fishing for trout and salmon and Chama is only a few min away for the train ride. It is closer to the Hwy than El Vado also. Click on the thumbnails in link for larger pics.

I've stayed at both lakes and would highly recommend either. I forget which one is a no-wake lake, but the scenery is great. Nice campground, too. If you have a long rig, check with the ranger first for available spots.

Heron is the no wake lake. The sites are long and wide, so they should not be a problem. No sewer hook-up, just water and electric. Willow Creek and Blanco are the campgrounds you will want to use.

I like the Blanco campground. It has large sites. I don't fish so there isn't much to do except relax and that's why I go there. I really like it. We have gone there for Labor Day weekend the past two years and have reservations again this year. Like someone else said, Chama is not far away if you need supplies.

Also, be very aware that if you ask the rangers if you can get in and out of a campground that this may not actually be the case. We nearly got stuck one time as relative newbies out at HLSP at the Brushy Point cg. If you have a smaller rig, this won't be as much of a concern for you, but don't take it for granted that the help there actually knows anything about RV, and what it requires to turn one around. You know- because there are trees there too.....

You can go online to make reservations; just make sure you get into the large sites that are actually large enough to accommodate your rig and you should be ok. When we tried to go, they didn't have anything open for a rig our size.

I have also heard that there are lots of hooks on the beach and it's more geared to fishing than swimming, fwiw.

Happy camping,
Tikki
