I am looking for a toy hauler to pull with our Chrysler Aspen (fancy Dodge Durango). Unfortunately, the tongue weight of Toy Haulers is rather high.

I am looking for something in the 19 to 21 foot range. I am having a hard time finding something with a tongue weight much less than 700 or 800 lbs, though. Does anyone have any advice?

Am I being overly concerned with tongue weight, or will it be reduced when the toy hauler is loaded towards the rear?

Aspen specs:
5.7l HEMI
4-WD
GVWR 6,650
Curb Weight 5,043
Towing Capacity 8,700

I am looking at a Tahoe California 19FB

Manufacturers spec (I am not sure what they really are):
GVWR 7,400
Hitch Weight 800
Dry weight 4,420

The trailer you listed is within range of the Aspen.

You can always add a Hitch that is rated for the trailer/TW.

Anyhoo yer gonna have a heavy TW even though you somewhat offset the TW with toys in the back.

yer looking at 11% to 15% for TW = heavy

I saw the hitch rated for 500# w/out a weight distributing hitch (WDH) but have you been able to determine what maximum rate with WDH the hitch is designed for?

With a weight-distribution hitch I should be able to handle up to a 1000lb tongue weight. I am concerned with the cargo/fuel/passenger/misc carrying capacity of the Aspen, though.

I ran a towing weight demonstrator spreadsheet that I found on the internet. It is indicating that with a loaded trailer and Aspen, the Aspen will be 481 lbs over its GVWR(not over the GCWR or towing capacity). This also indicates that the loaded tongue weight will be 1180 lbs. Dry tongue weight is 800 lbs.

Note: The demonstrator is placing the tongue weight at 18% the trailer weight which is 1180lbs. This may not be accurate, as a lot of the load would be to the rear of the trailer axles.

You really have to look at 15 % of the GVWR of the TH

KZ= 7000
15% = 1,050lbs

I know I don't have a Toyhauler for towing it empty

I'm in a similar situation with my '05 Durango, listed towing capacity of 7350 lbs., curb at 5005 lbs. I am looking at an '09 Adrenaline Blast 170MPH (GVWR 7000 lbs, base weight of 3745 lbs, hitch weight of 460 lbs).

Running the maximum figures will exceed the Durango's GCWR of 12500 lbs. I guess my question is how often do you guys max your trailer? I'm thinking I'd be way under the trailer's GVWR with my 800 lbs. motorcycle and gear, food, etc. With a WD hitch and class IV receiver, I'm thinking I'm good on the tongue weight too (1200 lbs max).

Any thoughts? Please shoot holes in my thinking here.

Rich

Wolf-

Hard to say because you would have get the TH weighed to really see what it's "base" weight is- Can't go by what dry weight is.

I am at GVWR but I when I go out Fill the freshwater and all the udder******on the trailer for Camping in the desert.
