Dissenting opinion... what if the dog gets sick, a once a day check just is not enough.
What about fire, emergency, person that is to check on dog gets sick?

I agree with having someone come and stay at the house, but to leave them alone 24 out of 24 hours?

Look around for a place that isn't a big kennel There are many pet sitters now, people that will bring dogs into their home and treat them as one of theirs. Start looking now, and let the dog go and stay for an over night or two.

All dogs need to learn to be away from mom and dad... it really is good for them to learn they can survive without you!

Start looking now!

Have you ever left Minnie alone for any extended period of time? How did she react? You might want to "try it out", first. If you do not know how she acts without you there, you might be in for some surprises, not necessarily good ones.

Remember the TV commercial a few years ago with the guy calling from the airport, "Daddy will be home soon." Then he says, "Are you on the leather couch again?" It would be a hard call for me and either way would be traumatic for our spoiled little mutts as we've never had to leave them. We've left the kitty many times, but cats are different.

We just bought a class A and planned on taking our dog with us, but she's not willing to go up the stairs. Four years ago we had a 3 story house and stairs weren't a problem, but she's 12 now and these stairs are steeper.

Plan B was getting someone to stay with her. We use a cleaning service and one of the women has been here every two weeks for the last three years. My wife asked her and she said she would do it any time...problem solved. I considered using a pet sitting service here, but I would rather have someone I've known.

The Kennel we left one of our dogs with around here was so good, my dog didn't want to come home. The people at the kennel said she had a lot of fun playing with the other dogs. She was an "only dog" at home.
I would find a good kennel to leave the dog at.

I think a dog is better off at home, but it seems like the dog would need more than one visit a day. I would also be nervous about a dog going outside alone, but I am in an area of NJ where black bears regularly roam through. If you do the kennel route, check it out thoroughly in advance. They are definetly not all the same.

I think every animal is different, and they change over time. When our Akita was young, he had extreme separation anxiety, whether we left him in a kennel or at home. While we were summering in Colorado several years ago, we had a social time for those of us staying in the CG thru the summer. We left Tojo alone at our trailer only a few yards away. He was disturbing everyone around our site, so I put him in the truck, and parked him closer to where we were gathered, and he was just fine that way. Now that he's older, he does just fine at home. Our son comes by to check on him a couple of times a day if we can't take him with us.

Our dogs are with us all the time but once we had a pup that had to go to Texas A & M for cancer treatment that lasted a week. I had to go get him after 5 days because he refused to eat for anyone. He was so stressed at being left in a kennel that he just quit eating. Because of that experience I would vote for leaving her at home with someone checking on her at least once a day if not more.

We kennel our two dogs-we've always done this and have never had any issues as we have an excellent kennel. That said if you are mnore comfortable leaving the furkid at home, then do so, but I'm with Rockhillmanor-I'd learn toward finding someone who will stay at the house. Yes, most of us leave pets home during the day, so it's not really any different at night, but I would not feal comfortable leaving my dogs alone both day and night.
