From the site above (http://home.stny.rr.com/jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm) read especially, "In 60 minutes the AC Filter accumulated 574gms of dirt and passed only 0.4gms. After only 24 minutes the K&N had accumulated 221gms of dirt but passed 7.0gms. Compared to the AC, the K&N “plugged up” nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt. See the data tables for a complete summary of these comparisons."
I spent a good part of my professional career working with off-highway vehicles including selecting engines and dealing with the engine installation. There are very good reasons (not sales related either) why Cat, Cummins, and other OEM engine manufacturers use paper filters and will not warranty their engines when used with an oil-wetted filter.

A performance filter for my C7 would run me $200 incl. S&H. The stock air filters sold by Freightliner are $65.
I used K&N for years in my old gas MH, before that in my gas tow vehicle, and I loved them. Anybody had any experience using an AFE filter?

Craig, does the coach have a Filter Minder? Does it show any restriction with the stock filter?

I spent over 30 years designing, testing and manufacturing Aerospace, Automotive, Industrial and Medical Air, Blood, Lube and Hydraulic filters. Testing elements made by a competitor is a regular practice.
Although years ago I used foam air filters ("Green-Weenie") on my race bikes, I never used foam filters on anything that would require more than 2 hours or cost more than $50.00 to repair.

So, profit motive is not their reason for not recommending these filters-- in writing at all their Maintenance Seminars.
But it is your engine (and pocket book)-- use what you choose.
No, they sell paper filters for their engines.
Perhaps you have information I do not-- would like a Caterpillar part number for an air filter for an RV. Never seen one.
What happens when the chassis builder selects an engine for their vehicle, the chassis builder also selects an air cleaner, exhaust system, and cooling system (fan and radiator) and fits it onto his vehicle. The OEM engine manufacturer will provide guide lines and even some help to the chassis builder for doing this. When the chassis builder gets done, however, these "accessories" must get the OEM engine manufacturer's approval or the chassis builder won't get any production engines.
I'm sure that Cat sells air cleaners (paper) for their off-highway equipment. They probably don't stock air cleaners that their OEM customers have selected unless it's one of the filters used on their own equipment or it is one that is widely used on non-Cat equipment. I don't know what Cummins does, but I suspect their dealers stock commonly used air cleaners also----especially those on class 8 trucks.
