Even if you could do an up date it still would be 10 yrs out of date

Can't comment about the Canadian updates, but definitely not true for the US. Well, at least that's my experience.

Well its my experience.

Have any of you that have done the 2009 update seen a large improvement on the maps? I also was going to download the update and could not. The Garmin website lists Canadian Tire as a dealer, they do not have it in stock but can order it at $99.00. That will be + GST & PST is it worth it?

Just a reminder to all. Thanks to the US taxpayer for the GPS system. Developed by the Defense Department, it was released for general public use after KAL flight was shot down in 1983. Ronald Reagan released it. Europe, China and Russia are supposed to be deploying their own systems "one of these days". You may struggle with some of the technology, but GPS gets your aircraft to the right spot. Great technology even if vendors mess it up sometimes.

Garmin is a great company. Their customer service, IMO, is second to none.
If you live in the USA, you could be right, but from experience I agree with the OP. The map in the Garmin I purchased was and still is next to useless in the Maritime Provinces. The help (using the word loosely) from Garmin was worse. The jackass I had contact with knew less about the product than I did. Guess what I got in an email a week back, a new map is available, but once burned twice shy. I now use Google to find a location, print a map and it hasn't failed me yet.
Buy another Garmin, or their maps, you'd have to be kidding. On the first trip with it my wife wanted to throw it out the window, I wouldn't let her, I wanted to keep it as a reminder not to be stupid again.
If I ever get tired of printing maps, I may buy another GPS, but it won't be a Garmin

Cheers Willey

Wow, I just returned from a trip to the Maritimes and our Garmin did a fine job routing us around Nova Scotia, PEI and NB. We didn't use it to find POI though, we relied on your excellent travel guides for that.

I never said the product sucked, All of you in the US and UK may have great product support I'm talking just the Canadian side.
They sell there product up here we should have equal access to the updates for the products we buy.
A $30 difference when our dollar is next to par is not acceptable in my mind.
CANADIANS Just Beware We can't download, We'll pay more to update it. We don't get the same help. But they are more than willing to take your Money.

Funny how this is the only product I have trouble updating.
My friend just plugs his Tom Tom in and updates it no problems or hassels.

My Garmin was one of the better things I have spent money on.I hope my Canadian friends can get these problems fixed, I can't see why anyone would be gleeful of a stock price falling. Not many winners in stocks of any source outside of oil of recent times.

I have both a Garmin Nuvi350 and a Lowrance iWay500c and without any difference in the maps and traveling the same route, the routing software of the Lowrance is much superior to the routing software of the Garmin. I also will not buy another Garmin unit. That said, I will not travel without a GPS unit, even the Garmin.

CANADIANS BEWARE

I'll never Buy another GARMIN product. There suport out side of the US. is a joke We can't down load up dates. If they want to sell there products here they should give us equal access to up dates

They say " The download is not available due to import/export
regulations and brokerage fees and duties when a product crosses the
boarder.

I have bought and down loaded many things from the US. with out any problem and never heard of such a thing on down loads.

We can buy the updates here months later at an infalted price $99 here $69 in the US. even with the dollar almost at par. I guess it's just a way they can give us Canadians the SHAFT.

I'll NEVER BUY GARMIN

I bought the 2009 map update for $59.95 (+ GST, no pst) for my Nuvi 750 in May from GPScity.ca. Arrived quickly. Garmin sent me the MapSource DVD in January at no charge. No problem with the DVD crossing the border. Have used the 750 on a trip to Florida and most recently all across Canada with destinations in many cities and towns large and small. Will be heading down the west coast to San Diego before heading for home in Ontario. It's amazing to have all that information packed into such a small package. Have hardly looked at a paper map since getting the Nuvi. Wouldn't hesitate to purchase another Garmin. Even my wife loves the 750.

the last time I drove across the Border into Canada, the agent pointed at my dash and asked in sort of a gruff voice, "What is that?". I thought he didn't want me to bring my GPS in but then I realized it was my radar detector he was fussing about.
