Sometimes braces or other items are in your way when installing the hitch. Just try to have the fivers hitch pin close to the center of your rear axle in the tow haul mode. Being off an inch or two from center either way will make no difference.

An inch or two ahead will transfer some weight to the front wheels. Not much, but some.
I saw this show Extreme 4x4 where they built this Humvee with a gooseneck hitch... The ball must've been 6" behind the axle, and the trailer was a beefy looking rig. Boy was that rig running uphill...

The ball (for a gooseneck) or pin (for fifth wheel) should never be behind the axle centerline when towing down the road. The exception is a class 8 semi truck hauling an RV fifth wheel, which is way way way below the truck's typical trailer towing ability.

Well, it's not like you have choices.
IF the hitch is properly installed they will follow the manufacturer's specific measurements for your vehicle. Moving it around to suit individual preferences is hardly ever possible due to all the body and frame obstructions.

The Dodge's bed cross ribs and frame don't allow for any choices in where the Reese is mounted. I've installed my hitch in my last five Dodges. Reese provides measurements that put it right where it needs to be. Not to worry.

I have a 3500 srw and a 3500 dually. Both have the hitch exactly where Dodge spec says it needs to be. Both pull the 14K trailer with no handling problems or weird sensations. I don't know how a different mounting position can fix whats not broke. 2 cents.

my 16k manual slide Reese is mounted zero over the rear axle on my '03 2500 3rd gen Dodge. 2200 lbs of pin weight adds zero the the trucks front axle.
