How do you figure out how to downgrade? We have a beautiful 5th wheel, but we can't use it as much as we would like. The trip to the track next week will cost me $100 each way. So, I have been thinking that maybe we should get something smaller and lighter. Here's my issue... the trailer books for $27,000 - $33,000... I owe 17,500.... How do I trade down? Without loosing my shirt.... or the theoretical 10K$ equity.

You could try to sell it on your own, but you probably won't get what the book says. You will most likely get more than a dealer will give you for it.

The only way to come out in good shape is to sell your 5er outright. If you try to trade you will take it in the shorts, unless the dealer realy wants your trade. That doesn't seem too likely right now.

To avoid 'losing your shirt', you don't 'trade down', you sell your fiver then buy something 'smaller and lighter'.

That's not what I wanted to hear... I know you're all right thou... I just can't picture anybody wanting to spend that much money... With the price of fuel, how can the market for a 9000 pound box be good? Someone else told me this morning that more people are buying trailers/RVs because they can't travel so far...
Thanks... I'll let you all know what we do, if anything..

Just save your money for trips and go maybe once or twice less and stay longer when you get there! We have talked this till the cows come home and I do it this way,I take the last time I took that same trip and figure the difference, you would be suprised at the difference, some of our trips are 25.00 more or our big ones are maybe 100.00 more and if the small of an amount stops us from being able to go maybe we should get out all together!!!! IMHO
Plus downsizing you are not all of a sudden going to get 10 mpg more. You will be lucky if it changes a couple of Mpg and that isn't an issue to do what you are talking about!

john b got the right idea!
See my rig in signature.
Your fuel costs are probably not much more than mine.
I average 10-12.5 mpg.
Next year probably a DMAX and 27 footer, and I really don't expect fuel costs to be much more than now.

We finally came to a similar conclusion on "less trips". About 90% of our camping is done at the same place, about 75 miles away. The park has on-site storage, so we decided to store it there. While the monthly storage cost is higher, we'll save enough in diesel fuel to more than pay for it. Plus we are using it more often. It's nice to jump in the car and drive to the lake and the trailer is already set-up waiting for use.

We recently sold our 17.5' fiver and purchased a 25' fiver. Surprisingly there was no difference in the amount of diesel the truck uses when towing. If you're wanting to go smaller to save fuel, it's likely you're not going to save enough $$ to make the exchange worthwhile.
