I think you're correct! There really was no obvious reason for his actions.

May we all have safe travels.

You know, I think I'd rather have that than the ones that pull out from a side road right in front of you making you hit the brakes hard.
It's not like they can't see that big thing barreling down the road. It's got to be they can't stand to be behind a bigger vehicle.
I wonder if truckers have the same problems because I have it happen to me in my grain trucks too and those things won't stop on a dime.

Let's look at the other side of the discussion, shall we?

It is entirely possible that the van/driver wasn't from Idaho either, and moved into the left lane for one of three other reasons, only one of which had anything to do with you (if he/she indeed even knew you were there when they moved):

1. They are from a state where their van is not supposed to travel in the right-hand lane (which is reserved for semi's and rv'ers and vehicles pulling trailers in some states). Not wanting to be turned in or impede your way, when they noticed you were going to pass on the left, they moved left to get out of your way. Unfortunately, they weren't quite quick enough, and you didn't move back into the right lane.

2. They saw something in the road ahead in the right lane and moved over to avoid it. They didn't even notice you until they were there, or they did notice you and it was either get there first or be forced to slam on the brakes. You didn't notice what they were avoiding because you were so focused on them.

3. They thought the passing lane was coming to a close and didn't want to be forced off the road if you didn't get past them before it did close, or they believed that their left turn was coming up and you wouldn't get past in time (typical of local fisherpersons in every state).

Be glad you had time to slow down to avoid an accident when they moved left (and that their move gave you that reaction time). It could have turned out much, much worse.

Even tho this isn't the correct thing to do and I know this (please no replies stating this. I already know), its what I would do if in the situation happened to me. just reading about it irks me.

I would be pi$$ed. I would be all over his bumper like white on rice, a paper plate and a snow storm! I would forcefully pass him covering him in a -cloud- of black smoke.

Maybe you can explain this one. We were driving down a mostly 2 lane highway and we came upon a slower vehicle (van) doing 55 in a 65 mph zone. We are doing 60 mph, and when we get the very safe chance to pass (3 lanes with no traffic in opposing direction) we attempt to do so. On goes the blinker and we pull over to pass. Well, this guy then puts his blinker on and pulls in front of us to keep us from passing! What was up with that? We couldn't figure that one out. Maybe you could enlighten us? Have never come across this before.

Many should reread this. Notice. they tried to pass in the 2 lane section. There was no passing lane for the driver in front to pull into, or to protect. there was no place for him to move over to get out of the way. He was blocking pure and simple. Why? WE on't know. but it was very dangerous for him to do. Not to mention stupid, and rude.

Sounds to me you just ran across what we in Michigan call a "jerk". We have a lot of them here. They are also the ones that refer to themselves as "innocent victims of road rage".

A always love those quotes. "I was just minding my business, and this guy started shooting at me." Uh, we buy that one.

I give these jerks plenty of room, and I'm sure they'll meet their end when they run into another person like themselves.

the first thing you did wrong was giving him warning by putting your blinker on you should have nailed it to the floor and blew his *ss off the road.
then when he moved over to block why didn't you fly up on his *ss honking and waving the one finger.
Hasn't driving on the same roads with the idiots taught you anything???

That move usually works for me. (minus the one finger salute)
