Hi CA: Does the GPS unit help locate diesel fuel and food stops for over size vehicles? Jim2007

Thirded, WanMan! Traveling gives us that many more options for hiding and finding caches - let's face it, just hunting around the home city can get boring.

I'll throw in a 4th for Geo-caching. Some of the letterboxes have the GPS coordinates too so letterboxing is also an option (the two are very similar).

btw, I also have the Maestro 4250. I have some issues with the text-to-speech software and some of it's routing choices but overall it's a nifty little toy.

Purchased my first GPS unit the week before I left on my 4 week trip - which I'm still on. It is really comforting to be able to see the map of the area I'm driving in/through. I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 5000 with the 5.25" screen.

I can key in gas stations for the area I'm in and it will show you all kinds of stations including Flying J's once you tag the station you want it has there phone number on there then you can call them up.

Our new cell phone has GPS and it worked fine. SFO to Redlands, CA and then places around Cherry Valley which was off on a turn to the west but it said turn east. Then to SAC and Redding and back to Castro Valley. I like it. has LatLong but not heading and altitude and has extra charge to get info from cell towers. It gave traffic congestion areas as we drove to SFO for flight home. Verizon wireless and if i activate internet for $5 a month i can get my email. The map small but can be zoomed and pressing OK gives the voice command again. Cost extra for GPS connection but cheaper than a $400 GPS and I needed th phone anyway. It is small but wife did all the input as we drove and it requires a zip code to get a good city address and does house number location OK.

The GPS is a wonder. I learned things about my own area that I never knew. Plus, I do consider that the GPS device does in fact qualify as a loophole for the man rule of not asking for directions.

BTW, wrt Geocaching, my wife and daughter always "tolerate" hiking but they both LOVE "treasure hunting". So it's perfect.

matt7591 - got a chuckle out of your remark about "man rule of not asking for directions" - we were travelling with another couple (my best friend driving) and their kids in a tourist town in southwestern Ontario. He wanted to go to a zoo there and despite having a mobile GPS in the minivan he insisted on driving up and down the highway leading into town trying to find this damn zoo and all three of us - including me - took forever to convince him to finally pull over and ask directions. As it turned out, the zoo had closed two years earlier. I love my GPS but sometimes you can't beat the guy at the fruit stand on the side of the road. (BTW, I uploaded Topo maps in mine which I find are most useful for my type of exploring.)

I connect mine (a Garmin 60CSx) to my Nikon D200 camera. Each photograph has the camera location recorded, and can be viewed using Goggle Earth or Panoramio. You will never have to wonder where that photograph was taken!

Or worse, asking a person who either doesn't know, gives you incorrect directions, or you can't possibly remember the 4 turns you're supposed to make without stopping to ask another lame brain.
