Or a swing out galley for that matter as well. I'm looking at a lot of different PUPs online and these features seem intriguing. I have a family of five (wife and three young girls) and it seems that a slide out dinette would give us extra room for one of the adults to sit at the end of the table. A swing out galley would give some extra room as well. But do they really, and do they take up more room in the closed/traveling position to where you can't pack as much into the PUP and therefore have to load more into your TV?

The room added by such options is welcomed most in the evening or during a summer squall...trust me! As far as taking up room, we always found enough room to get everything squeezed into our Jayco pop-up! If not, try one of the many brands of roof racks and cargo boxes.

I've got a glide out dinette in my Niagara, and love it for the additional floor space. And, when closing up, I can place my super light weight stuff on the dinette once it's in, with no damage to the frame or curtains, so I really haven't lost any packing space.

One of the main reasons we chose our PUP was the slide out -- it provides a whole lot more floor area. In our old PUP and HTT (w/o slide out dinette), it seemed only one person could easily move around at a time without creating a traffic jam. As for packing, there's enough room in the trailer to easily overload it beyond the rated capacity!

We enjoy our slide out dinette very much. It has the feel of a nice cozy alcove.

With a family of five, we're very happy to have the slide out dinette. We have plenty of storage space inside.

We love our slide-out dinette. When we went to the dealership to actually sit in and walk around inside the PUPs, we were surprised at how much difference it made. We didn't like the PUPs where you'd have to stand up from the couch or move in order for someone to walk by.

Do you mean tip-out galley like my Fleetwood Sun Valley has? Not sure what a swing out galley is.
The slideout makes a dramatic difference in how big the inside FEELS when you are in it. But it really does not make any difference (IMO) in the useability of the camper. It adds no storage, no seating, no counter space. Just more floor space.
But for many models, you must remove the dinette cushions before popping down and use up all the space under the table. Slide-out campers usually have very little interior storage space when popped down which is why most of them have a front trunk.
I recognized when I was shopping that I could knock off 300# for the slide and 200# for the front trunk and get a plain Sun Valley with just as much storage space when folded as a much pricier Utah. Of course mine doesn't have that wide feel when open, but having enough space to pack was my biggest concern.

Icebox, I upgraded with the slide out being the main reason. Yes I did loose some aisle space for storage when the top is down but that just forced me to carry less overall.
There is no way you can economically justify the extra square footage. However, I would encourage you and your family to spend a hour or so inside a non-slide out PUP and do the same with a slide out and you get the real feel for the advantages.
Hope this helps.

We have camped in PUPs without the slide-out for years. Now we have one with the slide-out and we LOVE it. We would never have one without. There are three of us and a lab, and we appreciate the extra floor space it gives us.
As someone else said, we have just learned to take less due to the lack of aisle space when popped down. We are realizing we don't need half of the stuff we take with us anyway And, if we need to get inside while traveling we just send in the 10 year old daughter to retrieve things for us! She's getting very good at it.
