I don't know about your situation. Here is mine:

I pull my 6,000 lb fully-loaded TT with my '99 'Burb K2500 (7.4L, 3.73 gears). It does a great job and I've got thousands of miles of trouble-free towing with it.

If your 'Burb is a 1500 model, you are going to have to do some calculations to see if it will work. 'Burbs come in many different configuration (engine, gearing, etc.) so it will depend on what your 'Burb has for a drivetrain to give you a full answer.

I would suggest you take the time to look over DavidG's website on towing located here:

That should help you answer your own question.

My original TV was a 1999 Suburban 1500 4x4, and I pulled a 28' trailer with a dry weight of 5600 (gross 7000). I brought the trailer back from Indiana to Utah, and was perfectly happy with it UNTIL I got to the mountain passes in South Dakota, Wyoming and Utah (we took the long way home). After a few more outings (and a bit more gear each time, I suppose), I was just not happy with the 5.7L and 3.73 gearing in the 1500.

If my trips were all in the midwest, I might not have felt like I needed to upgrade. So I think it might depend on what type of trips you take and how you drive. Even things like steep overpasses might be frustrating.

One weird thing about my 1500: In reverse, it would motor my trailer right up my steep driveway; My 2500 really struggles doing this, and I have to put it into 4-Low to back it in?!?

I have towed 27 feet non slide TT, 6800# with my K2500 Suburban. 2003, 6.0 with the 4.10 rear end. That combination worked very well. (16,000# GCWR)

That same trailer, however not yet loaded at 6,800# yet, was towed by my 2002 Chevy Tahoe. 5.3 with the 3.73. In my case pulling was not so much the issue as tongue weight. My rear living camper had a very high tongue weight for such a small camper. 1,200# to be exact fully loaded. And that was to much for a 1500 SUV. had to even watch it on the 2500.

Pulling is 1 thing, holding up the TT is another. If you have many people in your Suburban and some gear, you can max out the rear axle or the GVWR. This is true of most any 1/2 ton SUV of any brand.

I also had a 97 Tahoe which was most likely similar drive train to your 99, 1500 Burb. It was the 5.? with a 3.73. I use to haul a 6 x 12 cargo trailer with it, 6,000# and while I knew it was back there, it did OK here in central and southern Ohio. However when I bought my TT and had the 2002 Tahoe, the newer engine, when I dropped that 5,000# empty TT on the back it was night and day difference then pulling the 6,000# of cargo trailer. The 8 foot wide 9 1/2 foot tall wall we tow down the road with a TT eats up a trucks performance unless you have the power and drive train to take it and cool it.

And yes please post is 1500 or 2500 with engine size and rear axle, and how many pounds of people are inside. A TT name and model will help us figure out the tongue weights as well if you can hold it up.

Like was mentioned, read up on Towing Tips.com. David also had a 1500 Burb before he went 2500.

Hope this helps

John

I was the proud owner of a 1999 Suburban when I purchased my present trailer. The first trip I went from Texas to Florida and return with no problems except for horrendous gas mileage. I then took a trip in the mountains with it and was afraid I was going to fry the thing. It just struggled to pull it in any elevation. I estimate my trailer, a 28 ft. Terry with slide weighs in the neighborhood of 6700 lbs the way I have it loaded. I soon traded for my present vehicle and except for the gas mileage is the best tow vehicle a person could want. The salesman assured my my Suburban would pull the trailer, but he just was not in touch with reality. In my humble opinion, for what it is worth, you will not be satisfied pulling what you want to with it. Good Luck..

This will give you a definite answer. Maybe not the one you want to hear, but the true answer. It will depend on your model.
