Hi Retireing this yr and looking at purchaseing a lake cottage or Mobile in Texas I will be spending our winters there and using it as a place to park the HM and a central point for traveling from. Does anyone have any Info on where is MH friendly and what to watch out for and avoid. We still want a stick place there as we want to bring our parents down for a couple of weeks each yr as long as they are around and its easyer with a trailer or cottage on the lake to put them in and enjoy with them. One day we will full time. Thanks for any advice. Eddy

Texas is full of snowbirds. Lots go to the Rio Grande Valley but we like it here in Kerrville, just northwest of San Antonio. There is plenty here to do and it is more central for travel. It gets a bit cold at night in the winter but days are warm enough. This is the hill country.

Since you are from Canada there are a number of considerations such as health insurance, auto insurance, etc. There are also 1 or more Canadian Snowbird Associations, do a web search ... here is one ... I don't know anything about it since I am a Yank.

I think Lake Travis in Austin is one of the most beautiful lakes anywhere. All lakes are nice, but the beauty of a lake in the hill country in Texas is unmatched. MHO

I enjoy East Texas because we are so close to other states and still only a few hours away from the Gulf Coast. Lots of pretty places down here, thats for sure. The hill country is beautiful as well. Rockport / Fulton area is a Gulf Coast area that is second to none for the beauty! Get on down here, we will put another tater on the fire for you! I was not born here either, but I got here as quick as I could.

If you are looking for lake property in Texas do a Google search for Lake Palestine Texas. Beautiful lake in East Texas with its mild winters and relatively low prices and low taxes. Close to Dallas, Shreveport, and only four hours from Houston. Nevertheless, you,ll find places like Tyler still have a small town feel.

Another thing to be aware of is that Texas does not have state income tax, so the property taxes can be high in some areas. However, you can usually buy a lot of house/land for your money here.
As for the areas to live, I agree with what others have said, Gulf Coast (Rockport, Port Aransas, Bay City is growing), East Texas (Tyler area or maybe Toledo Bend Lake on the Texas Louisiana border), or the hill country around Austin.
Most Texas travel centers on the main hiways at Texas borders give away state travel books that would be good for you to have. If you search the internet you can find the agency and order one of the free booklets. Sorry I don't remember the name of the agency or the book at the moment.
As a side note- I lived in Williston North Dakota for three years in the early 80's and visited Regina when I wanted to get to the 'big city'. People there were very friendly and hospitable. I hope you find my home state of Texas to be the same way.
