Thanks for all of the info,
yes, MSN is my homepage. How's that important? I tried the power cord thing and nothing!
I think I'll pop the cover off tomorrow and check it out. I do not hear the cooling fan either!
I'll try the battery thing tomorrow also. I'm always learning.......

Watch the fan from the rear to see if it flicks at all.

Take it to a shop and have them take a look, they have the necessary equipment to check out what may be wrong. As to the comment about the PSU being easy to change, not if it's an older Dell: their PSU's are proprietary and not easy to come by.

I just worked on an eMachine at church, and what I found out was that the power supply went out, which is typical for those computers, and when it goes it also takes out the motherboard.
Bottom line, in my trouble shooting I took the computer to a local shop and they had a power supply tester they could hook up and check the power supply. Once we found out it was bad we then took a new PS off the shelf and connected it to the motherboard and confirmed that the motherboard was bad as well.
Now the upside to all this was that I was able to use the old CPU and memory, as well as other cards, on a new motherboard along with a new power supply. We got a "new" computer for under $100.
Well that was until we found out we couldn't use the restore CDs as they were too badly scratched by the previous owner and so we had to purchase a new XP Home cd, another $95.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode to turn off the Power Saving Mode?

Safe mode won't do it since you can get on line go to Tiger Direct.com and order a power supply. I can tell you how to jump start it but you need a second working PC to do it, just like jumping a car. anyway get at least a 400watt power supply takes about 3 days to get it or go to a Circut City or Staples to get one, You will pay more for it but it will be a same day repair
