My Dad took time to teach me a few things on maintenance and repair. When he passed four years ago I added his tools to mine; his all have a piece of blue tape so I know which are which.
when I do maintenance and repair on anything I think of him, what he taught me, our times together. Good stuff. Sometimes I ask him questions but I don't know that I hear an answer.
Does anybody else think of their dad or teacher when they work on their stuff?

Yes! Just the other day he told me to go get his nut splitter on a difficult faucet nut-what a help. He passed in 2003 and I miss him everyday, VK

Yes, reminds me to do things right and upgrade when possible instead of dad's way following the absolute low cost method to jury rig something or bypass to do without.

I also have some of my father's tools. The day that I felt like a man and not just his son was the day that I fixed a problem on his boat that he couldn't. That was also the day that I finally asked him about his life when he was growing up.That is one afternoon that I will always remember. Unfortunately he died of lung cancer three months later.

Through the years my dad and I did a lot of "handyman" and "shade tree mechanic" stuff together. He didn't have the best tools...most were barely adequate to get the job done. They didn't have lots of money but made sure me and my sisters were educated and able to live better off than they were. Whenever I buy a nice quality tool now I always wonder what he and I could've done with it!
Some of the things we did included...
- Always buying/fixing up VW bugs to sell and make a little money. My half-brother paints cars so he would make them nice and shiny after we were done with transmission/engine.
- Converted a flat roof to gable end roof on an addition to their house.
- Installed a 18X40 inground swimming pool. He did hire-out someone to dig the hole but we did everything else.
- Build a huge deck at my sisters house.
- Move an interior wall creating a small 1/2 bath for my mom off their master bedroom.
He also helped me a lot when we bought a house built in 1890's in remodeling several of the rooms.

My husband says he is becoming my father as he grows older. He spends way too much time on the TT. When at 80 he can go camping in midwinter in northern Michigan he will be there.

My dad (dairyman-farmer) taught me to fish, and that hard work was good for me. But he lied about the last part I lost him at age 48, when I was 19. He didn't know any mechanical or electrical, actually was afraid of electrical, maybe why I always had an interest for both. But I had to learn it all the hard, hands on, and daring way, and I always had to not only know what worked, but why it worked....or didn't

My dad was not mechanical and never taught me any mechanical things. My father in law did and I think of him often.
My favorite high school teacher taught me Electronics, Physics, Chemistry, pilot ground school, and he told me on more than one occasion when I was struggling with an experiment.
"If it doesn't work, read the book".
"If it still doesn't work, follow it".
I am amazed that reading a manual and then re-reading it before a project is extremenly productive.

Good Topic; My dad died in WWII. My Uncle Mike took over for him. He ran a garage. All my younger and teen age years, I was at the station, pumping gas, and changing oil, etc. Gas was 29.9 to 39.9 cents a gallon. Went away to college, during breaks and summer,I worked at the station. What wonderful memories, I have of Uncle Mike everytime I work on my cars and RV.
