I've been on crutches for about six years, needing a hip replacement. It was actually my suggestion to open this forum. Well, after a long wait, primarily due to the fear, I'm going for it. 10:15 am at Bryn Mawr hospital (country club) for a while, then rehab. Hopefully me, Cool Mike and his wife will be back in the ballgame soon. My wife is in the position of Cool Mike. I told her to go have fun at the casino and stop worring about me. She is going and so should you Mike!

Good Luck with your hip replacement. My mom had hers done when she was 75 and at that time she was a avid 10 pin bowler. They kept her in the hospital 2 days, and 5 1/2 weeks later she was back to bowling. A lot of how fast you get along is mental, so keep your pirts up and you'll be back to normal pretty quickly.

Will be 2 years the 13th of September since I had my Hip done in Columbia
Missouri, was in the hospital 4 days then a wheel chair and a walker for awhile now I don't even think about my hip hurting anymore, go and do what ever I want,I suffered with it for years, best thing I ever did for myself, you will enjoy your new found freedom, and wonder why you waited so long,,,,,,,Richard

My 87 yr old, fairly frail Mother had her broken hip replaced and never broke step!! it seems like 90% of the people we know have had it done and are doing better than before ... just do like the PT folks tell you (PT = Pain & Tortue!)and do everything religiously for as long as they tell you and you will be fine. Then you will wonder why you put it off for so long, I'll bet!!
My 89 years grandmom had both knees and one hip replaced when she was in her 70s. She is doing very well with these new joints! No problems in all these years.
Take it easy and be sure to do all those physical therapy exercises (speaking from experience after an ACL reconstruction surgery that took one month at home to recup).

Man, your biggest problem was waiting so long to have the operation, especially if you've been on crutches for six years. The last year before I had my replacement five years ago I was in such pain, I couldn't do much of anything. I had a full replacement at age 56, and it gave me my life back.
As for the rehab, I was in so much pain before the operation, rehab was a snap. The main thing to remember is if you're in pain, you can't do your exercises. So don't be a hero: take your pain meds as long as you need them so you can rehab pain-free. I weined myself off my vicodine within a couple weeks. Your hip replacement will be the greatest thing to happen to you ever. Mine is five years old now and I'm almost pain-free. The only time I feel any pain is when I lift things more than, say, 25 pounds, like boxes for the wife or other things. You can resume your life, but be careful putting too much weight on the new hip. Please let us know in a couple months how it went. Good luck.

Thomas, good luck with the surgery, Im sure it will work our fine, its vary common now days and you will feel so much better, you will say, why didn't I do it sooner. But I can understand your concerns, and I have been in your place, looking at major surgery.
I will say that sometimes its best if there's not a long wait between the time you know you need it and when it happens, its to much time to think about it.
Ruth, will take good care of you and things will be just fine.
Years ago I worked in several Hospitals, and converted an operating room for the first total hip replacement at that hospital, and this was back in 1967, so the Doctors, and staff have this procedure down now.
Just be good and do what the nurses tell you, or they might give you a square suppository. (old hospital joke) Keep us posted.
