We are thinking about taking a trip to Yellowstone the week of September 21 through September 28. This would be followed by a several day stay in Custer SP. Does anyone know what type of weather we can typically expect in Yellowstone during that period? We plan to stay inside the park at Fishing Bridge RV Park. We will be entering and exiting the park on US 14.
Prior to staying in Yellowstone we thought we might visit the springs at Thermopolis. Will it be too cold at this time of year to consider swimming in any of the hot springs of Thermopolis? We were thinking of staying at The Fountain of Youth RV Park. Any recommendations on this park or any others in the area would be appreciated.

I asked this same question just last week and all the responses I got were to enjoy it. Crowds are way down, the weather is cooler during the days - 60's and nights can be freezing. But weather is usually dryer, no or little rain and wildlife is abundant. Bears and sheep in the upper elevations are coming down to stock up for winter and elk rut is in full swing. You can fill your water tank and disconnect your hose at night to prevent freezing. Several years back in early September we stayed at Flagg Ranch off the Rockefeller highway between Yellowstone and the Tetons. We were new to RV'ing so we left our water hose connected at night and it froze - we had to stand outside with a hair dryer to unthaw it to use it again. Enjoy your trip at that time of year.

That's after a lot of campgrounds close down and a lot of people working there leave. Possible snow, but one never knows. Heck, it snows there in August. We went last year just after Labor day and it was good, after the crowds and before everything shuts down.

Only one gal I know that knows stuff like this and I suppose you have to have a pretty good relationship with her to get the info. Good luck.

We went on the same trip last year and wore shorts @ Devil's Tower and hoodies and jeans and sometimes winter coats in Yellowstone. Here's a photo we took as we left on 9-24-07 heading down the east slope.

We go every year in Sept, Its our favorite time of the year to go.
Be prepared for any kind of weather layer up so that you can take off put on according to whats going on. We have had snow a couple of times usually doesn't last.
Fishing bridge is open till the 28th of Sept but check with reservations for availability, Mammoth campground has no services but is open year around. The cafe at Mammoth has pretty good food and you can sit and watch the elk. Hiking is great due to the cooler temps and the crowds are way down.
Check out www.nps.gov search yellowstone and you will get all the info you need on closing dates of services,
Grizzly RV in west is still open, which is an option.
Enjoy! Yellowstone in the fall is the best

We have been there in June 2008, July 1958 and July 1968, and Sept 2006. Can't beat Sept. Weather is great although changeable and varied. Elk rut alone makes it the time to go. Kids also back in school and crowds are down. Grizzly RV is where we stayed 2006 and 2008
