North or South Rim? I can't give recommendations on the South Rim because haven't camped there. North Rim, stayed at Kaibab Camper Village outside the gate. Inside is the North Rim CG - dry camping, no hookups but I hear has beautiful sites and some are on the rim. Tought to get reservations there though - we tried which is why we stayed at a full hookup CG. Also at Jacob Lake is a Forest Service CG. Search for "North Rim Grand Canyon RV Campgrounds" and same for South Rim and you should get a lot of returns.

South rim: I like to base camp it Williams, at Circle of Pines KOA. We used to stay at Grand Canyon KOA, till it was destroyed by fire. Williams KOA is a large, clean, tree filled campground 45 to 60 minutes from the Canyon rim. Far enough off the highway to be quiet at night. Large sites and friendly people. From Williams you can drive to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Flagstaff (15 minutes east) and Sunset Crater. About 90 minutes to Monument Valley. There are a few campground just outside the park, but ratings have not been good. We stayed just outside the park many many years ago, and the morning helicopter noise was unbelievable. We don't do much hiking, but we kept ourselves busy for a week visiting all the places listed above. Have a great trip.

I recommend you stay in the park if at all possible. Summer traffic is sometimes bad and we've had to wait in line as long as 20 minutes to get in the south gate. Grand Canyon Trailer Village is full hookups and reasonably priced. Its not fancy, but you can walk to the shopping center, rim, and visitor's center or catch a shuttle bus. The North Rim is a totally different experience. Less crowded. The North Rim CG is probably my favorite CG in the country.

We're doing The Train...nice RV park and train ride to the rim and back. Should be fun. Just an alternative. We'll be there in a couple of weeks.

Trailer Village - full hookups. You can reserve by going through Xanterra. They do all the reservations for the hotels/campgrounds inside the national park. Mather is the other campground and is no hookups
This is my recommendation as well. We don't like the train ourselves as we liked to walk to the rim, hang out go back to the trailer ride our bikes and then go back and see more of the canyon. We don't like being on a time schedule so the train was not going to work for us. Also, we ended up being able to be there for their stargazing party and got to see saturn, venus and others through professional's high powered telescopes! Couldn't have done that if we did the train. Also, sunset at Hopi point is an absolute must. Line up early!
Enjoy the Rim. It's beautiful and pictures you've seen do not do it justice!

hi. just did the train and rv park package. the kids had a great time. yes the 3 1/2 hour at the Grand Canyon was short but we still had a great time. the Grand Canyon Railroad rv park was ok. it was very quite and had some very nice showers and bath-rooms. full hook-ups was nice.its just a paved parking spot with hook-ups. The trees are still growing.
the train was cool for me i love trains.
the town of Williams is really cool place. the shops and diners are nice. we ate at the Pine Country Restaurant, great home cooking and some amazing pie's too. then the next night we hit "Twisters" for some old fashion ice cream malts.so if you have the time walk down old rt 66 and see the sites.
