Thinking about doing the flatter portion of the Truckee river in the Tahoe area. 2 kids - ages 11 and 14 - one not much of the adventurous type or we'd be doing the rapids.

Is this worth the $$ to do?

What else have you done in South Lake Tahoe that you thought was worth it???

We do it about once a year. It is a lot of fun. Not a whitewater thrill, except the final class II rapid. More of an enjoyable float.

There is a lot of hiking, biking and swimming around South Lake Tahoe.

Just a slow all day drive around the lake is kind of nice. Stop here and there. The water is beautiful. I doubt your kids have any knowledge of or interest in, but if the Ponderosa Ranch from the old TV show is still open, that's worth a stop. Only if they have ever seen the series.
A short drive to Fallen Leaf Lake south of the south shore is pretty. Or go explore Donner Lake where the Donner Party was stranded. It's a pretty lake. Lots of hiking, etc. You'll find things to do.

Donner Pass and the town of Trukee are interesting. The drive to Carson City and tour of the capital is worth it to me, as is the drive to Virginia City.

The rafting is not adventurous, just a nice ride down the Truckee River. You start near Tahoe City and end up at the River Ranch Lodge where you can have a nice meal and talk about your trip.

Thanks! Keep the ideas coming. We've done Tahoe before so a drive around the lake is already a "been there, done that" for us. But...since we've been there before we were unsure of what to do this time. Going back because it's the only place we've gone that the kids wanted to go back too - so they are the one's who "planned" this vacation in a ways.

Just looking for something new and different.

The first leg of our trip will be to Coloma/Sacramento so the capital and that area is where we're starting.

Have thought of Virginia City or Carson City. Any thoughts on those two? Which is more interesting? What is there to see in both cities?

The stream profile chamber near camp richardson is nice. also in the area are several of the old tahoe mansions now owned by the govt. They don't charge for either of these. Donner state park has a nice museum. Truckee has many interesting shops to wander through in old town. There are several boat trips available from camp richardson and zepher cove.

The float is fun and beautiful. It's fun to start water fights with the other floaters, etc.

Are you outdoorsy? Lots of beautiful hikes and kayak rentals. Into history? The state parks are on turn of the century mansion grounds. Into partying? The south shore has casinos, shows and clubs.

My nephew said "ok, I'm done. Lets do something else." 2 minutes into the float like it was a carnival ride. Kids today are used to instant gratification and quick "hits" of excitement where everything in between sucks. It was good to see him relax and enjoy 2 hours of mild fun.

On the southwest side of the lake is Vikingsholm Castle at Emerald Bay you can hike down it is steep going back or take one of the paddlewheel boats one at Zephyr Cove and one at the end of Heavenly in the same area there is a visitors center with a nature walk and fish viewing room and next to that going toward Camp Richardson is Valhala a group of old lumber barons homes right on the lake. It is worth a trip to Genoa at the bottom of Kingbury grade to visit the first settlement in Nevada and as mentioned Carson City the capitol, railroad museum and the old mint museum, just a few. Have fun

Something else different to do is to drive into Squaw Valley (site of the 1960 Winter Olympics) and take the gondola to "High Camp". They have a large lagoon pool at the top, and a covered ice skating rink. The views are amazing, plus you can take a hike, or spend the afternoon around the pool. They serve food and drinks around the pool, also. I also recommend Vikingsholm at Emerald Bay...definitely worth the hike, and the tour of the home is very interesting.

Another thing to do if you like to ride bikes is to pick up the bike path in Tahoe City and follow it down the Truckee River and into Squaw Valley. The River Rafting on the upper portion between Tahoe City and River Ranch is very relaxing, and really just a "float" until you get to the last 200 yards and ride the class 2 rapids (nothing dangerous) down to the River Ranch where you disembark from the raft. You can have a great lunch on the hotel deck and watch the other rafters descend the rapids.
