Thread necromancy....

I've been looking at these numbers and reading some stuff. I'd bet they dyno'd the 6.7 in od2 or 6th gear, a double overdrive. The 5.9 is 1 to 1 in fourth gear, its top gear with the 48re. They would have had to dyno the 6.7 in fourth gear as well, that is the 1 to 1 ratio on the 68re.

Hmmmm.

More reason I no longer subscribe.

Still a pretty good showing for the ole 5.9. I'd bet the 2 engines are alot closer in power than most people think.

The 48RE is 1:1 in 3rd gear. 4th is 0.69:1. Either way, I can't wait to read the article. I have the magazine at home, but haven't got to it yet.

If I had another 100 horses, I couldn't keep tires on my truck

I have owned both and disagree with the numbers as well. The 6.7 feels far superior for towing, especially with the 6 speed trans and engine brake.

Wish I had an exhaust brake and 6-speed automatic on my 5.9...

So I skimmed the article on the rack... iirc the tires were different on the two trucks, but they swapped them and did a run too. I did find the numbers odd given the reaction of people who have towed with both.

One anecdote... they mentioned that they sent the 6.7 out to have the pyro installed as they could not SEE the manifold. I guess that engine compartment is a bit packed?

The thing it reminded me about is that my cat-less dpf-less plain old 04.0 has some advantages. It also got me thinking about the possibility of adding a performance exhaust turbo-back (since I can)

The Duramax 2008 LMM is also down on power (slightly) when compared to the 2006 LBZ.

2006 LBZ Duramax - 318hp/557tq
2008 LMM Duramax - 302hp/541tq

Ford seems to have actually improved performance on the 6.4L as compared to the 6.0L.

2006 6.0L PSD - 296hp/473tq
2008 6.4L PSD - 306hp/529tq

For the Dodge/Cummins, the results show as follows, with the 6.7L making slightly more power than the 5.9L did:

2006 5.9L Cummins - 287hp/521tq
2008 6.7L Cummins - 304hp/529tq

All of the above were taken for the "stock" rear wheel chassis dyno curves posted on Hypertech's website.

http://www.hypertech.com/

As much as I enjoy reading 'Diesel Power' magazine, I'd put more faith in Hypertech's numbers than the ones in the magazine.

One thing that struck me as I read my own post - how similar the numbers are. Competition is tight among the big 3 diesels!
