I had planned on taking I-5 North thru Redding the end of November, but have heard 99 up to there is a good route as well.?? Will be pulling a 38' 5'r.
Need to make some decent time on the road ... runnin' 4 - 500 miles a day. Also curious which route would be best for "accessible" stations for Diesel fuel.?
Any inputs are appreciated.

It's a toss-up. Both I5 and 99 are about the same in all regards and 99 merges with I5 at Sacramento for the rest of your trip to Redding.

I prefer I5, only because 99 goes through several towns without limited access.

Easier fueling off of I-5. Less city traffic on I-5. Both have crappy sections of road. If your coming from Bakersfield stay on 99, no reason to go over to I-5. When you get to Stockton, take Hwy 4 west to I-5, easier and less traffic than switching over in Sacramento.

I drive both on a regular basis to visit the kids at SacState. Last trip with our 38ft MH and toad was on the 99. Previous trip was up the 5. They are very similar. I think the 5 has more big rig traffic. You will find a Flying J along with other truck stops on both. The Calif. speed limit when towing is 55, and it is enforced. You will find the truck traffic cruises at about 60mph or just a little less on both roads. Since your destination is Redding, and if you don't plan to stop in Sacramento (the Fairground is a nice place to overnight if the Fair is not in town) then the 5 would probably be a better bet for you. No interchanges just straight north to Redding. There is a group of truck stops at Grapevine at the bottom of the hill, Buttonwillow, and another group of truck stops at the 12 interchange about 30 miles south of Sacramento. Plenty of places in between. Harris Ranch is the 1/2 way point, great food but service is meant to be relaxing and if you are in a rush you'll find it slow. Also it tends to be crowded for a gas stop. Enjoy the trip, again speed limit in enforced by CHP. Happy Trail.

Hwy 99 goes through a lot of small towns where there are lots of on-ramps there are also portions small country roads that come onto the highway. I-5 is a more comfortable drive because it doesn't go thorugh any towns and therefore has much less on-ramps and merging traffic. There are a sufficient number of places along I-5 for fuel, food and rest. The places on I-5 are designed for freeway traffic while on highway 99 you may be going into the towns for fuel and food.

99 merges with 5 for about 10 mi. in Sac and then splits off to go through Yuba City...Chico...and other small towns!
