Have enjoyed parking and visiting with wife's brother here in Richmond for past week. Been really great to have our own accomodations and not be a bother to him and his family.

He has internet service through a dedicated line though - no WiFi at all yet.

Came outside to the patio a few days ago and had to work on laptop for a short time so for the fun of it I checked for available WiFi in area...... There was one. Little weak, but doable and it was non-secured. So - I piggybacked on that for a short time (am on it now as a matter of fact).

Interesting though - the patio table is one of those glass top, umbrella in center, metal legs and metal ring around the outside.

I pick the laptop up off the table top and I loose the connection ---- it "only" works while laptop is sitting directly on the table glass top.

Guess I need to explore other antenna options in the future.

God Bless

Bill

I picked up one of these:

Linksys WRT54GC Compact Router

There are others smaller, but this is about the size of my hand, works well for adding wireless in a place that only has wired at the time. Great for hotels, business/meeting rooms, that sort of thing. Add wireless to any high speed service as long as you know how to configure them. Even has the ability to hook up an external antenna!

Also works great as a switch in the times where you need that capability!

Here's a good review with pictures!

Naa, I won't flame him for jacking bandwith

Let me put it this way

if you left the front door of your house standing wide open... Would you charge someone who walked inside with Breaking and Entering?

Neither would I (Illegal entry perhaps, B&E no)

Same here.. The idiot who leaves his router un-encrypted is leaving his front door wide open and hanging out a WELCOME sign far as I'm concerned.

This does not mean I support jacking bandwith.. Just means I don't condemm those who see the "Welcome" sign and log on in.

I agree - if you care so much about people using your connection then you should take the time to figure out how to secure it. It isn't that hard.

At a CG I searched for a wifi signal and found one. I could tell the source was an RV nearby. On the side of the RV a website was painted. I looked at the website and found a description of a family traveling with childern. On the website was an email address. I emailed them and thanked them for the use of their wifi. I got a reply back and they appreciated my thanks and said that they leave their wifi unsecured on purpose so others can make use of it.

Knew that I would be "flammed" for this post - but did it anyway.

Just to clear the air here - I have WiFi at my home and I left it open on purpose. I know that sometimes others can and will use it and if it helps them out then that makes me feel good to help someone.

If I lived in a large city where the opportunities were different then possibly I would feel differently.

By the way - if, and that is a huge IF, I finally elect to put on an internet satellite dish I will add the WiFi to it "Just for that purpose". Then others in the campground can benefit from it ----- if that's wrong then I'm really baaaddddd.

God Bless

From the hyjacked WiFi - direct from the top of the patio table on the deck....
