is it safe to run the generator while plugged into shore power?? have the unit parked at a rv park for a couple months and want to exercise the generator for about an hour, is it safe to do that while still plugged in or will it be too much power

Before we say it's okay to do, shouldn't we have some idea of what he's running?????

No , all RVs are set up so that they will only operate on one power source at a time. To be super safe one could go turn off the breakers at the power pedestal or unplug from it.

On a rig that has a generator prewired, it has a transfer switch that won't allow any problems. If he is using a portable generator then his shore power cord is plugged into the genny and not shore power. Either way he is safe.

My Onan manual says for proper exercise, it should be run under a load (Air Cond and elect hot water heater for instance). It depends on your coach on how you do that.

A lot of coaches don't have a transfer switch and you must unplug from the pedestal and plug it in a receptacle in the coach electrical bay.

By his other post so far. I would guess he has a older 35' gas MH with a gas Onan generator in it.

If it doesn't have a switch to automatically change it from shore to generator power. Then he will have to unplug from shore power and plug into the generator power outlet to exercise the generator with a load.

The above information is correct IF the ATS functions 100% as designed.

But how much more work is it to turn of the shore power breaker and/or unplug to make ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that nothing bad can happen?

Remember, you do not want to start your generator with a 120 VAC load on it so everything you are running should be off anyway. Same (actually even more important) at shutdown.

One thing to consider is if that ATS switch fails(mine did) you now have a very expensive generator repair. I now turn off the breaker as stated previously because it only takes once and you really wish you had.
