My lead-in 12v positive connection at my fuseboard gets so hot I can't touch the terminal, is scorching the mounting board and threatens a fire. This occurs with any significant load. Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to what to look for? Could this be a bad coach ground??? My power source is two 6v golf carts. My solar control shows normal output from the batteries. The problem occurs when I am not hooked up to 120vac. havent been hooked to 120 so I don't know if I have the problem then as well. I have infrequent web connection so thanks now for any help you can give me!!

Sound like the wiring is inadequate for the Load or You Have a Bad Connection!
You Should start by Checking every Connection between the Batteries and the Load Center, Tighten every Screw and Nut.Do this on Both Sides + and - ! Then check the Circuits individually. Remove All the Fuses, making sure that They are Not Over sized. Replace them one by one and check to see if any individual circuit is causing the problem! good Luck!

Thanks "rob". I should have provided more detail: Problem occurs with different circuits and the wiring is adequate (fiver is now 5 years old and has been fine since new until recently). I have checked and retightened all battery connections.

Could this be some internal problem in my converter even though I'm not hooked up to 120??? Would a bad ground connection cause the heating??

In most cases the cause of heat is a poor connection at the point of the heat. I would disconnect that connection carefully clean it, cut back the feed wire about an inch, resolder the board connection, and check all connection between this point and the batteries, cleaning and if there is enough wire reterminating them. Broken strands in the wire maybe the problem. Good luck.

Not a bad ground but a bad connection AT THE POINT THAT HIS HOT.

In fact HEAT is often the FIRST indication of a bad connection. (low voltage or no voltage are the other two)

So the bad connection is the one that's burning your fingers

Clean and inspect THAT connection.. You may need to solder the connectors or replace them or clean them or otherwise modify/improve them.

I^2*R =HEAT , so high current at the connection that is hot pretty well indicates a bad connection (corrosion etc). Other posters are correct, clean the connection good and it wouldn't hurt to put some anti-oxidation grease on it after you get it back together.

cheers
